All-
I received an extremely well performed analysis of the corrosion present on nearly all of the sheet skins, but only the sheet skins, included with my HDS kit. As best as I can remember, they were at the bottom of the shipping container. Ben should be given an atta-boy unprecedented in the list! The analysis is too big to post, so please contact me for a copy.
This is total speculation, but to my mind, the significant factor is the presence of a high concentration of calcium. Road "Salt" isn't SODIUM chloride any more, it's CALCIUM chloride.
My kit was delivered in February, which is the height of snow season in my region. Thus, my hypothesis is at some time in the loading process from the hub to the final carrier, the shipping container came into contact with "Road salt". I'm guessing the container was offloaded onto a pile of slush before being onloaded onto the next carrier.
Bottom line? Have your kit delivered in the summer. I lost thousands of dollars worth of components and don't have a tinker's chance in Hell of recovering the expense after all this time.
At least I have a good idea of how it happened. Sort of like parents who found out who murdered their child 5 years ago.
Bill

Here is a copy of the report I sent to Bill. Sorry about the large file size - for some reason the PDF didn't reduce the file size all that much.
Regards,
Ben

Ben, Bill,
I think it would be a good idea to see that Zenith gets a copy of this report.

Jay-
I agree. I'll try to forward it to them.

Excellent report!
The only thing that I would like to seen would have been a SEM image of
a non-corroded section and surface. BTW Alclad layers are about 5% of
the total thickness.

Thanks, Ken. Glad you liked it.
There were a few areas on the corroded surface where the base alloy was relatively clean. Areas like that are generally rather feature-less and so taking a picture of it with the SEM doesn't really show anything. You can see some fine surface texture from rolling, dust, etc but that's about it. Similarly, in the cross sectional views if there is no corrosion product layer then all you can see is the edge of the alloy - again it's a rather plain sight.
Regards,
Ben
