Hi all C I suppose I should post pics of my ski design also C they are just straight skis C no wheels. I've made 6 sets like this for different planes. If anyone is interested C I would be glad to give details on their construction. Bottoms are 3/16 UHMW. Take care C and enjoy winter!! Jim-
I just bought 3/16" HDPE for my temporary ski bottoms. When I've
proved the design, I may or may not go with the laminated ply bottoms.
The HDPE is half the cost of UHMW, but a little more friction, I'm
told. Have you heard of it?

Hi Lynn C Can't say that I have C although perhaps I did end up with some without realizing it. I bought a 4'X10'X1/4" sheet from a local supplier. Someone else picked it up for me and although it seems a lot like the UHMW C it doesn't slide as well as the UHMW does. It did work though C I used it on 3 different pairs of skis I built. I really noticed how it dragged when I was takeing off from a lake last spring with my 220 lb son. The snow was melting and sticky C and I was beginning to think we weren't going to get off the lake C and then we had to clear a hill with tall trees. We made it though C but this new set of skis are 3" narrower and have the white UHMW and they slide better than the old ones. I put 4 more landings on these skis today C it was about +5 F and I flew for a little over an hour. Take care C Jim Chuk Avid MK IV Mn

Hi Marco C The sides of the skis are made from 1/8" X 4 1/2" X 1 1/2" aluminum angle. The post that the axle goes into is 2 1/2" X 2 1/2" X 1/8" al. tube. I used a 1 5/16" hole saw to drill the hole for the 1 1/4" OD X 1/8" aluminum pipe and used structural epoxy to glue it in place. Some 3/4" gray plastic electrians conduit will slide tight into the 1 1/4" pipe and then it will fit your 3/4" axle. The top of the skis is more 2 1/2" tube cut into 2 channels on a table saw C or you could just buy some 2 1/2" X 1" channel. The bottoms are fastened on with #6 X 32 flat head machine screws. I do have a 1/4" X 1 1/2" X 18" UHMW runner on the bottom of the ski C without it it takes about 3 times as much room to turn around. The bend on the front of the ski is made by laying it out in 1 1/4" segments C and then cutting out a 5/16" to nothing wedge at each segment. Where the bend starts C the ski is 3" high. I used a propane torch to heat the UHMW to bend the ski bottom at the back end of the ski. I should have made a sketch with dimentions on it and posted it with this message C perhaps I can do that tomorrow. Hope this explains the skis C feel free to ask questions. Jim Chuk Avid MK IV Mn

Hi Jim-
Paul Franz mentioned.....
Ultra Poly HVOS
High Visibility Orange with Silicone added
Crosslinked for enhanced abrasion resistance and lower
coefficient of friction.
...and this really sounds exciting to me. I've sent out emails
requesting pricing and hope to hear from them on Monday. Jeez, the
fact that it comes colored orange is a plus, as my plane is orange!
Pretty puny excuse for using it but it sounds like just the ticket
for skis. If this stuff is what they say it is, I may have to abandon
the idea of plywood bottoms with carbon fiber, or fiberglass coating,
etc. My present skis are UHMW, and I just bought HDPE for a test,
knowing that the UHMW was less draggy, but the HDPE was half the
price. For a test, I didn't care what the friction coefficient was, I
just wanted to test the design.
