Its Christmas and I got the day to work on my plane. Has anyone have a easy way to remove and install the lower cowl by ones self with out scratching the devil out of it? Suggestions welcome.

Hey Tex: I remove mine by placing my rolling footstool under the front, and gently lowering it down to the stool. I take out the screws, un hook the two air hoses, then the hinge pins on the oil cooler (while holding the front at the last bit) and then wiggle/work it down as required. I have removed it about 4 times and still have not scratched it (knock on my hard head)

First, it is easier if you cut a notch in the lower fiberglass cowl at the trailing edge to easily fit around the nose gear leg and provide clearance when installing and removing it. I found this out after I already scratched it. Look at Nick's bottom cowl. This mod is not in the manual. I cut out a notch about 2.5" square.
Second, I wrap a towel around the nose gear faring and pant. It helps to prevent scratches.
Third, I installed a length of twisted wire around the top engine mounts, (one on each side) so I could slip the wire through a quarter turn fastener hole in the lower cowl to support it while I remove the four lower screws. Then, I support the bottom of the cowl with my right knee and pull out the twisted wire so the cowl rests on my knee and carefully lower it to the ground.
Sound like a lot of maneuvering....it is. But, after you do it a few times, it gets easier. Oh, and don't forget to remove the clamps for the oil cooler inlet and air ducts.

HI Tex , If you go to a 2nd hand shop & get an old telescopic office chair take the back off & wheel it under the cowl. Adjust the height , take out the cowl screws & wheel it out, works just as good putting it back on. A simple one person operation.
We use it all the time on our build projects.
