Can anyone tell me whether the fuel drip trays that I have seen below the carbs on some planes are necessary in a 701/912S installation.

They certainly are on my 701. Take a look at your carburetors and determine if an overflowing carburetor would run gasoline down on the muffler, if so then you need the trays

Hi Van,
The trays could be replaced by a clear plastic tube that takes the
overrun fuel below the firewall. I use this to keep my Bing 64s from
dumping fuel within the cowl. The larger clear tube is reduced and the
small line from the carb is short into the larger tube to keep the
fuel from being sucked out in a continued stream.

Otherwise, I'd assume you need the trays,

I had similar Bing carbs on a BMW motorcycle and sometimes they would drip gas on my boots. Yes, you need drip trays.

Hi Vann
In my opinion the drip trays are a must. I still do not understand why rotax does not include them. It's not like the engine is cheap. From my own experiance there are 2 reasons the drip trays are needed.
The carbs are close to the muffler that generates a lot of heat. On hot days I had the fuel vaporize in the carbs while taxiing causing a huge rpm drop. The drip trays were installed and this never happend again. The trays also act as heat shields.
Th other reason is the overfow from the carbs will go right on the muffler. You can only guess what can happen there. On my first engine run up my friend noticed fuel running out of my cowl. When I looked into it I found out rotax had installed the wrong fuel pump spacer giving me over 25 psi of fuel pressure. Fuel was spraying out of the overflows and onto the exaust. I could have gone up in flames before even leaving the hanger.
After the problems I encountered I believe the drip trays and a fuel pressure gauge are a must for the rotax 912 uls
