All,
As I sit here watching the Air Force Academy / Houston bowl game (my team currently losing by 3 points) and listening to the wind howling outside (21 gusting to 36, with an occasional over 45 knots) I am already thinking about my annual New Year's Day tradition for tomorrow. Every New Years Day (for as long as I can remember) I have made it a tradition to go flying each 1 January. Kind of my way to "start the year off right".
The forecast for tomorrow looks good for most of the US, so I am suggesting that we launch as many Lightnings (and Esquals) as possible tomorrow to start off 2009 right. So if you have a flying Lightning or Esqual, and if your local weather if good, get yourself out to your airplane and get some "wind beneath your wings". Take your camera with you and send me a photo of you and your Lightning.
Blue Skies and Happy New Year,
Buz

PS: Since it is already 2009 in Australia (or soon will be) I hope you guys down under are flying now.

New year...new news. Be the first to know what is making [quote][b]

Buz
Nel and I decided to enjoy your annual New Year's Day tradition.  We enjoyed five stops and 2.5 hrs of zipping around AZ. The weather was questionable. Started out at 10:00AM with Clear 62 degrees, wind NW at 3 gusting to 31/2. In the afternoon the temp went to 72 degrees with calm winds. The attached pictures are of Nel in Marana, AZ (AVQ) just after lunch. We were then off to Greg Hobbs airport for the afternoon. Thanks for starting this tradition!!

<?xml:namespace prefix="v" /><?xml:namespace prefix="o" /><![endif]--> Hello Wayne

I just viewed your photos. Nice! Are you located in Tucson? I must have just missed you today at the airport. We had out of town visitors today and I didn't fly, but I will be in the air tomorrow morning.

Luck to you.

Allen,
Good to hear that you are still enjoying your airplane. And nice photo. I will put it in the next newsletter. Send some others if you have them and some words about flying your airplane.

Hi Wayne,
Your description of the Arizona weather makes me "home sick". I was stationed there so much (over ten years total) that I really miss the place. And the photo of Marana really looks like the place is greatly improved since I last landed there (probably mid 1980s and I was in my Pitts). Anyway, I did get up today for just over an hour. Took a friend for her very first "small airplane" ride. OAT on the ramp was just over freezing and as you know that equals good airplane performance.  I plan to put all the "First Day of the Year Flight" photos in the next newsletter, so I appreciate you sending the one of Nel sitting in your jet. I will also put in the photo of Greg's strip - although as he said as Oshkosh, "I have never read any of the newsletters". Something about not knowing how to use a computer. Next time you see him, tell him (with a smile) that I said to Kilo Mike Alpha.
Blue Skies,
Buz
PS: Your jet still looks great.

Hi Buz,

Greg lives about 12-15 miles west of Marana airport and internet service, I believe, is the problem where he lives.

Bill Applegate, kit #49 in Tucson with temps in the low to mid 70's!! Smile

Hi Bill,
You Arizona guys would really like being here in Virginia this morning - OAT on my back deck right now is 29 degrees. But hey, what about those poor guys that live way up north - like Wisconsin.  They probably can't even get their hangar door open due to the deep snow.  As to Greg, even though I have not been to his place, I admire what he is doing out there and consider him a good friend. We were both in Tennessee at the same time while he was building his Lightning.
When you get the chance, send me an update for the newsletter on what you have been up to.
Blue Skies,
Buz

Allen,
My guess on the heavy stick force you are experiencing with the flaps down is due to the bungee trim system that is out of adjustment. The bungee system needs regular adjustments due to it loosing elasticity with age or change in temperatures. The only permanent fix is to change to an actual trim tab like Nick developed for the Lightning.

I think I'll do just that....if I can find it. I never knew there was an airpark around Gila Bend with water. Those are the two things I love most...water and airplanes. I'll probably leave Marana Airport around 9:00 so I will be there about 9:45 +/-.

Thanks Wayne

So, you live in Virginia? It must be very beautiful there. If it makes you feel better, over Christmas it was 28 degrees here in Tucson with lots of snow on the neighboring mountains. The last several days have been in the low 70's with clear blue skies and no wind. For the most part, Winters are pretty mild here but Summers are brutal! You probably know, it is commonly over 110 degrees here in the Summer.

Have a great day.

Gary,
Enjoy your flight to visit Wayne and Nel and take some photos for the newsletter. Their place is near Buckeye, but is new since I left Arizona for the last time in 1986. I instructed in the F-4 at Luke from '71 to '78, then was the base commander at the Gila Bend ranges from '83 to '86 (2.7 million acres of Arizona dessert). Kept my Pitts at Goodyear and my Bonanza on the main base at GBN. Fun times. Left there to go back to the F-4 in California. Then to Virginia in '89. Been here ever since, but I do miss the "dry heat" of Arizona.
