Does anyone have any information about converting a Series 5 Vixen from nose gear to tail dragger? Has it been done before? The small nose gear on the Vixen really limits where you can land.

I don't know of any one that has done that, but would be interested in the conversion myself. I intend on flying into the back country this summer with my Vixen, but some of the strips in Idaho are not good for the smaller wheels. I do know that John McBean has flown into much of the backcountry with a tri gear and said it worked well.

I almost bought a Vixen with the intent of doing a conversion. I spent a couple months discussing it with some VERY knowledgeable people and studying pictures and diagrams. I came to the conclusion that it is quite possible if it is your intent to use Grove gear. You are going to need to do some pretty in depth calculations to ensure it will be strong enough, but from studying the pictures the frame of the Vixen and the Outback are the same all except for the door sill. And if you top it all off with a plate to cover the front lower door frame area, like the Outback, it should be nice and strong. If you really want to, go for it but it is going to be a fair amount of work especially if you need to remove the covering to get started. Good luck with the project.
