Perhaps I didn't explain the issue correctly; I'm not talking about temperature or moisture having an effect on the paper fuel filters. I would like to know if anyone has had an issue with Ethanol enhanced fuel causing the paper filters to become partially or totally clogged.

A few years back at a Rotax seminar conducted by Phil Lockwood we were told never to use a paper filter. The reason was that if you have bad fuel, the paper filter will clog up and stop the fuel flow completely whereas the screen filter will still let enough through to keep your engine running. You can buy these filters at Napa part # 740-1155. They are clear and have one screen in them.

I concur.
I also have heard Phil and Dean say to stay away from paper element
filters. This was based on field experience with failures.

Switch to plastic mesh filters.

Consider it an AD.

I doubt the paper filters will have any issues with paper filters except if you are premixing your fuel and you have a phase separation at which time the engine will stop filter or not! With oil in the gas when a phase separation occurs it forms a heavy mass of off white to tan coloured sludge which I doubt you could pass through a fine screen let alone a paper filter.

Water will pass through paper filters no problem... At least it does on cars and trucks not to mention my coffee maker. Water has a very hard time passing through felt or chamois while gas passes right through it... Use a good felt cloth or Chamois to filter all your fuel. BTW it is suggested to pre-wet a chamois with gasoline before using it to filter water out of the gas.

Tom.
Been using car type metal\paper filters since 1995, ethanol blend for at least 5 years. I change them yearly and cut them open for inspection. The old filters are like new except for a slight discolouring of the paper element. Never found any foreign matter or deterioration. Since using ethanol I never get even a drop of water from my drains. I believe the ethanol absorbs any small amount of condensation inside the system.
Yearly inspection of the carbs is also pristine.
As someone has mentioned on the list, water will go through a paper filter. I had the experience in my pickup when the filler tube rusted and it took a while to locate the hole under a protective rubber sleeve. I removed a fair bit of water from the carb before I found the problem and yes the filter did start to breakdown after a couple of weeks of contact with water. Lesson if you find water in your system, change the filters and clean out the carbs, lines and tanks
