I'd also like to know how long it was from when you got your "pink slip" (temporary Airworthiness Certificate) until you got the "real thing" ?

I can't recall exactly how long it took to get the permanent
certificate but I think it was less than a month.

On Dec 15, 2007 I paid my DAR $500 for the inspection. I believe it was higher than normal because it was close to the holidays and the deadline for the special E-LSA registrations were fast closing in on me. He said he was already starting to be completely booked for the following January.

Jay... I don't recall how long it took to get the AC but I did get it last year some time.

In 2004 mine was free. Done by the past president of the local EAA
chapter. He did inspections for chapter members free. Smile

I was handed the "real pink slip" at the end of the inspection.

Check with the A&P's in your area and see if the local FSDO has any inspectors that they've had good luck working with on field inspections and the like. Then I would suggest contacting the inspector directly and asking how long it would take to get the FAA (hopefully him) to come out and do it.

To my surprise we've had good luck getting two different inspectors from the Detroit FSDO to come out the 100 miles to our little airport and all it cost us was lunch.

Good luck!

Tim

Had my inspection done by an FAA Inspector from one of our FAA FSDO's.
Took 6 days from the time I turned in my paperwork until the actual
inspection.
No Charge and when he left I had all the final documents in hand.

Also don't forget to apply for your Repairmans Certificate at the same time.

It took about 30 days to get my "Plastic" card from the FAA.
It looks just like your "Plastic" Pilots License.

professional and excellent to work with. (and free)

I have the Cincinnati FSDO close by so I hand carried my paperwork there. The FAA inspector called me about two hours later and we set up an inspection date for the next week. I was handed my official 8130-7 Special Airworthiness Certificate at the end of the inspection. Cost = $0

It was the cheapest part of my whole project!

Good luck,

Gig,

Look at the EAA list of DARS at
http://members.eaa.org/home/govt/help/ab_dar.asp.

Mine was done by an EAA DAR for only his expenses (he had a drive a ways
to get to me).

Good Luck,
John

I posted the question because I'm quickly nearing that point and I have contacted the FSDO and they said they do it for free but other than the issue that they will do it when they get around to it there are some other drawbacks to them doing it.

They highly recommended a guy who I spoke with and who has even created a website to help those being inspected.

http://www.spava.com/DART.html

On this website is the check list he uses.

http://www.spava.com/AmateurBuilt.html

He also, included in the $500 + mileage he charges, does a lot of the paperwork prior to coming down including the paperwork for the repairman's certificate.

I've talked to two guys who he has inspected and they both gave him great reviews.

The links above will be of interest to anyone who is has never had an inspection.

Gig,

I don't mean to offend anyone in the FAA, but I have just heard too many stories about FSDO inspections to ignore them. I'm quite certain that not all FAA guys are like this, but in the cases I have heard about, the inspector was really intent on getting the paperwork right and then doing a "walk-around" inspection of the airplane. That may make it easier to get that airworthiness certificate, but the certificate was a secondary goal for me. I wanted a real in depth inspection, for my own peace of mind and the safety of my own hiney. In my opinion, the more eyes the better, and the more critical the better. My DAR did a VERY thorough inspection, but I had other guys spot a thing or two that neither me nor my DAR caught. For my money, whatever it costs (within reason, of course) to get a thorough inspection is worth it.

It sounds like you're getting close Gig! It also sounds like your DAR is a good one although I have discovered that both the FAA and DARs have their fair share of less than thorough inspections. And I don't think that $500 is out of line for DARs. In some cases they may only do a few per month, but they are there quickly (usually) and the training they need is considerable. Of course free is almost always better.

Don't forget to send that first flight pic to me (of your 601XL with a WW Corvair engine) at http://zenvair.com so I can get it in the lineup!

There are good and bad in every vocation and avocation. I think I'm going to get my money's worth out of this DAR. I think it is interesting in fact that the head of the FSDO airworthiness division is who first told me to contact this guy. In fact he mentioned that he might join the DAR when he comes to El Dorado because it has been a while since anyone from his office had been to El Dorado and because since it had been so long since he did an EX-AB inspection that he needed to get re-certified and that this inspector was one of the few DARs that was certified to certify FAA personnel.

The main reason he suggested to use a DAR in general was that if the FAA finds a problems that can't be fixed quickly is that they must terminate the inspection and start from the beginning when they return. A DAR is not limited this way. He can do the inspection and then return and only cover the issue that wasn't previously right and can even issue the AW certificate with a limitation that the issue be fixed before the AW certificate is in full force.
