Harvey, Here's what I found,
The 701 fork/doubler is 3# 6oz, a fork from a C150 weighs 2#2oz. ASSUMING
you can get the axels to the same weight there's 1#4 oz.
The 150 fork slips right on the 701 nosewheel tube so nothing to build
there, the tube WILL need to be a little longer to make up for the slightly
taller tire you're replacing but that extra tube length will also weigh less
than the 3/16" plate that the standard fork/doubler bolts to that you no
longer need.
The Tundra tire/tube weighs 10#9oz , a 6:00x 6 tire and tube is 8# 9 oz
another 2# potential
In the last year I've weighed a half dozen or so different 6:00x6"
wheel/brake combo's, including a couple from Matco. The lightest I've run
into so far have been the older Goodyears that were used on Champs/Cubs
etc., brake parts are a bit scarce but I got a NICE set on ebay for $200
with extra pads. They weigh 3# less (for 2) than the Matco's. So by
changing things a bit you can save 4 1/2# on the wheels, 2# on the front
tire and 1# + on the fork for (drum roll please) 7 1/2# +.
It's HARD to knock weight off a 701 !!! My limit is $100 a pound,
here's 7 POUNDS that costs LESS. Boeing/Airbus would KILL for that!
Two things lead me to believe you don't need a tundra tire on the front of a
701 (other than it LOOKS cool) First is the fact that I watched Grant Rappe
taxi around the ultralight area with the nosewheel in the air, second is
I've landed on the Texas beach, cow pastures, dirt roads, sand bars etc 2-300
times in a taildragger airplane with 5:00 x5's. I KNOW it's an apple and an
orange but unless you have a 701 that's out of CG toward the nose I know I
can live with the slightly smaller nosewheel.
It also brings up the question of yaw. Hopefully a smaller tire will
produce less yaw instability than the larger one but that's just a WAG. I
KNOW it will have less drag.
I'm NOT recommending anything, just reporting my homework.
