Brief heads up for those who haven't put their windshields in yet or
haven't gone to paint yet. My plane is in the paint shop now. I'm
getting mine done at Flying Colors in Gainsville, Texas. Mine is the
3rd 10 that they have painted. All three of us have had cracking that
had to be repaired in the bond between the epoxy fillet at the base of
the windshield to the aluminum. I scuffed, cleaned with acetone, didn't
touch the prepped surface, used West system epoxy and microballoons. I
put the aluminum tabs as per the instructions. It still had some
cracking. I have about 70 hrs. Frustrating.

Ronnie ( the paint and bondo guy), cut out the cracks and redid the
area with West systems and then screwed the repair to the aluminum. The
heads were then filled. The joint looks great now. Will have to give a
report later on how it holds up. I'll also ask him specifically what
fasteners he used.

I wanted to add this information. I remember the posts on the bond of
the windshield to the cabin top. I used the 2 part weld on, spring
clamps and did not get any of the crazing problems noted before.

I have been really impressed with their work so far. Will post pics
when she is done. The price is competitive, he will be done in about 3
weeks from start to finish. I didn't have to get in line for one year
to get it painted. He has good facilities. So far, he's worth a look
if you haven't gone to paint yet. website is flyingcolorsoftexas.com

Waiting to get it out of the paint shop is almost as bad as waiting for
the DAR to get here to sign her off.......
Maybe done this weekend.

Did you acid etch after you scuffed with sandpaper and cleaned with acetone?

After the fiberglass cures, it's a good idea to use blind rivets before
applying the filler.

Had a similar case on my bird at about the 50 hour point and getting
ready for paint.

Windscreen was starting to work loose from the metal and you could
'oil can' it quite a bit.

On advice (and with significant help from) Joe Mckervy, we re did my
bond to the metal by using layers of 1 inch wide fiberglass strips
soaked in epoxy and laid up.

We did this for several layers, then used super fill to smooth it all
out.

So far, it looks as good as the day we painted it.

Joe is magic with fiberglass, so all the credit is his.

On another subject, I took Tim's advice and added 2 computer cooling
fans last weekend to serve as both avionics hot air exhaust and inner
windscreen defrost (not hooked to heated scat tubing0.

Test flight yesterday was 100% successful.

If you're not yet at the windshield install phase, strongly suggest
you make provisions for windscreen defrost capability of some sort
Lots easier than trying to do it afterwards.....

I'm only building my wings at the moment, and I don't even have the section
of the plans that everyone has referred to with regard to the attaching the
windshield, but whenever I've wanted to attach fiberglass or plexiglass to
metal, I've used phenolics. A phenolic is a piece of composite material
that can be bought in many sizes, easily bonds to fiberglass, and is strong
enough to run a bolt through (with a washer) and attach to metal. I've made
some really solid transitions in the past with phenolics. You just embed
the phenolic into the plexiglass or foam, then bond it with fiberglass,
flox, or both. Then, drill a hole through it for the appropriate
fastener...good to go.

Again, don't know what's being referred to exactly, but figured I'd throw it
out in the chance it may help.

My windscreen faring is about 1.25" taller in both dimensions than plans build...by accident. Hopefully with the number of laminations and the greater coverage C mine will not separate. Notice there is a foam core buildup followed by two more layers of 9.0oz satin weave...no wonder I have so many hours into the project and I still don't have the engine mounted.

The first photo shows the amount of fiberglass overlap on the windscreen. It may look like the visibility is hamperred C but really it isn't.
