All-

     B+C recommends installing the  panel ground block on the firewall, but I've got the header tank in the  way.

     Is mounting the ground block  near the panel, then running a braided ground cable to one of the motor mounts a  workable alternative?

I've never looked behind the panel on a 601 with a header tank. But, could you not move the ground block closer to the floor?

Yes. From Zenith's web site:

		  Another method of grounding is to use a common grounding bus bar. This bar can be located under the instrument panel and used to connect all ground wires from equipment throughout the aircraft. This is referred to as a central grounding point. The grounding bus bar is grounded to the engine of the aircraft. In this case two wires must be run to each piece of equipment - the power wire and the ground wire. This type of grounding is more common in composite and wood aircraft. Both of these aircraft require some form of ground other than their airframe. Wood and composite material do not conduct electricity.

I just ran a cable from my engine block to the brass bolt on my  

grounding block. My battery is behind the passenger seat, so I also  

ran the battery negative cable to that bolt. That way there's fewer  

connections to maintain. I have my grounding block mounted on the  

firewall, but there's no reason it can't be mounted elsewhere as long  

as everything gets bonded to that point.



If your battery is mounted ahead of the firewall, it might be better  

to run the negative cable directly to the engine. Then you can run a  

much smaller cable from the engine or battery to the grounding block.

    I could, but then I'd have all my ground wires out in the open and right

Jerry-

    That's exactly what I was going to do originally. What really got me 

thinking was watching the HomebuiltHelp Glass Panel DVD I got for my last 

Matronics donation.

    Mark used a prebuilt terminal and switch unit for all his connections, 

and it's mounted in the panel. The whole DVD is shot with the panel on the 

bench, so it's not clear if additional grounding is necessary. It just makes 

sense to ground it to the engine somehow.

    I just don't like the idea of having all your ground wires out in the 

open, ready to get snagged by a passenger. I might know exactly how to 

weasel my way into the cockpit without doing any damage, but just about any 

flying builder I've talked to can relate to the damage a newbie can do.

I was worried about the same thing but I've tried to kick the firewall 

while sitting in the plane and have not been able to.  My legs won't 

reach and I'm 6 ft tall.  So I went ahead and installed it this way.  I 

also thought about the method in your previous method but decided to do 

it this way.  After all these are experimentals and we are learninig 

righte.

    Everything's a tradeoff. I guarantee you'll find something you don't 

like about the way you set your project up, and I'll do the same. Oh, well, 

we'll get it right next time!
