Grove nosewheel tube and tire assembly

I'm in the process of replacing the nose wheel tube on my airplane. The
original failed when the stem was partially pulled out of the tube to one
side, tearing the tube.

The new tube came with a nut, a shoulder washer, and another nut on the stem
(it's a 90-degree bent stem). The original tube didn't have the inner nut. I
can't find a drawing anywhere of how it's supposed to go together. It's a
5.00x5 tube and tire on a Grove split nosewheel rim. Can someone tell me how
the pieces fit? Thanks.

These are the same as motorcycle/ATV tubes. Check the tube to make sure that the small nut and rubber washer are tightened down to the base of the valve stem against the tube itself--these go inside the wheel. The other nut goes on the outside of the rim to prevent the stem from pulling inside the rim during installation.

Jay and I were talking about this at monday night chat and I have yet to do this assembly myself. I still don't understand where the nuts go and what gets clamped. There are threads on the stem near the cap and near the tube seperated by a smaller diamter smooth part of the stem. There isn't enough thread on the part near the tube for both nuts on my inner tubes or Jay's. It doesn't look like there are enough on the picture that you posted. Does the one nut stay near the cap, as in your picture?

The outside nut (closest to the valve stem cap) just tightens down to the outside of the rim; I'm not sure if there is a recommended torque for this. The other nut just gets tightened to the base of the tube. To be honest I'm not sure if that base nut is necessary for this type of application but I'll leave that up to you. The attached photo shows it being installed without the base nut and rubber washer.

From what I remember you only use 1 nut and it is the one where the stem meets the tube. Some rims use the second one to hold the stem from going back in the wheel but ours don't. If you can't find an answer I will pull my front wheel and check for sure.

That picture jarred my memory...... you do add the lower nut and that helps align the tube in the center of the rim hole and might help the tube if it were to slip slightly on the rim.

Add a little bit of talcum powder in the tires before you insert the tubes it helps the tube move as it inflates.

That's more or less what I found when disassembling this one.

I called the folks at Grove, too; they said this was a common questio for
them, and they recommended throwing away all but the brass nut, screwing
that down on the stem, and using it to center the stem in the hole. We
fiddled with things for a bit, and tried that - and the stem centered itself
perfectly, with the nut dropping into the hole like it was made for it.

The stems on my main gear tires are also, I'm guessing, out of the center of
the hole, since they're twisted to one side. I'm not looking forward to
this, but I'll probably go ahead and remove those tires and remount them, as
well.
