This question is for all you 750-Experts from a 701-Dummy. I was just reading the article in the new Kitplanes about the CH-750 (nice article). And I had two questions.

1. The picture on lower left of page 14 shows a BIG tab on the outboard end of the right Flaperon. What is it? And what does it do? Is this a trim tab? I looked at every other photo I could find of the CH-750 and I could not find a picture of the left outboard Flaperon to see if there is a BIG tab on that Flaperon too. Any help here would be appreciated.

2. After reading the posted specs for the CH-750 in the article and from Zenith, I have this question. If the CH750 is bigger, longer wing, wider cabin, wider horizontal stabilizer and elevator, heaver and still has the same 100HP as the 701, how can it have a cruse of 100MPH (at) 75% power? The 701 is smaller, lighter and has the same 100HP and it only has a cruse of 80MPH (at) 75% power. Why the difference?

I know I should ask Zenith this question and maybe they will see this post and answer it to help us all. But if not I would be interested in what the group might offer.

Thanks

Rick

When I was at Zenith, Sebastien told me that they improperly installed the struts on the left side at a slight angle. Since the struts on the 750 are airfoils, this improper installation necessitated the trim tab on the right wing balance things out.

Apparently, the streamlined struts contribute quite a bit to an increased cruise.

Another contributing factor to increased speed would be choice of propellers.

Define cruise. The 701 can cruise at 100 if you want to push it to high cruise numbers. As for the differences between the two, horsepower is only one part of the equation. As was mentioned, some streamlining was done. And what kind of prop will an O-200 swing that you wouldn't see on a Rotax? What effect would that have? Is the thrust of an O-200 at 75%, swinging a different prop, different than that of a Rotax at 75%? I don't have all those answers, but it's more than a simple matter of horsepower.

And the 750 won't cruise at 100 MPH if you are set up for STOL. As the article mentioned, the higher numbers were achieved with the two blade Sensenich prop rather than the three blade Warp Drive that is currently installed. From the impression Roger gave me, the Sensenich was more of a cruise prop. With the Warp Drive installed we cruised generally between 93 and 99 MPH when I was there, so I'd expect something in between as an average.

The dyno test I have read say the O-200 puts out 79 HP max. When we see a 750 fly with the Rotax we can compare. My neighbor is going with the 914 in his 750 and I will use the corvair.

I'm going with the Jabiru 3300.

Interestingly enough, I got my Zenair newsletter last night and there was an article by a guy who put strut fairings on a 701. He saw a 6 to 8 MPH increase if I recall correctly. He was surprised at the results, but it does show how such fairings can increase cruise speed.

While browsing the picture galleries on Zenithair.com website, I noticed a few 701s with wheel pants. Does anybody know how much this might help with cruise speeds? Does anybody know which manufacturer they were using?

Just curious. Not sure I'd do it unless it yielded 10 extra mph because of how girlie it looks.
