As some of you may have seen, I sold my CPS synchronizer kit a couple weeks ago because I wanted to upgrade to a electronic synchronizer. Well, I got to use it today and while the results are basically the same from both setups, the electronic tool was much easier to read and use. It works by comparing the vacuum readings in both intakes and displays an LED which tells you how to adjust the linkages. The electronics dampen out the piston pulses that you get on the gages so in my opinion, you get a better reading and thus better balancing. As important as balancing is, I think this tool is well worth the money spent which by the way is not much more than the CPS gage synchronizing kit. I got mine at Aircraft Spruce and they also have another one from the same company called the Synchromate II that has a few more bells and whistles but is more than twice the cost. Anyway, that is my tool recommendation for the year.

Just for the record, it appears that you are referencing the ACS pages here:
<http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/eppages/carbMate.php>
Notice they call the top one CarMate (sic) and the second one SynchroMate. That ACS
page doesn't tell much about the differences.

Here's the manufacturer's page (TecMate):
<http://www.tecmate.com/fuel_ignition.php>
They make other cool stuff too.

Here's their CarbMATE description:
<http://www.tecmate.com/carbmate_detail.php>
More detail:
<http://www.vacuummate.com/carbmate/>

And here's their gee whiz model - SynchroMATE
<http://www.tecmate.com/carbmate_detail.php>
More detail:
http://www.synchromate.com/>

It would appear that the SynchroMATE has a better display so you don't need to adjust
the resolution as it has 30 LEDs on the scale. It also has another attractive feature
which could come in very handy and that is it has a built-in tach and can display the
absolute pressure readings making it more useful for testing an engine under various
loading conditions such as when you're adjusting prop pitch. The main reason for
getting the more expensive one is "Where different vacuum intake values are required
for each carburetor, such as with Mariner and Yamaha 4-stroke outboards, the exact
positive or negative difference between two carburetors can be read off the
"differential" scale, which it is calibrated from."

ACS price for SynchroMATE is $178.65. CarbMATE $81.50.

Here's another reputable tool outfit who has the SynchroMATE for $167.97
<http://www.handsontools.com/TecMate%20SynchroMate%20Carburetor%20Tester_p_16034.html#>
and the CarbMATE for $76.14

Darin,
I have been using a similar device called a Twin Max for over a year now. It has worked out extremely well. It has an internal battery so you don't have to hook it up to and outside battery source. It is also somewhat less expensive. I bought it on EBAY for $70. Far easier and quicker than the old method!

Paul,

The carbmat and synchromate work on the same principle and display the output in the same manner (single LED readout) but the synchromate goes down to 0.2 mm/Hg resolution...the carbmate to 0.5 mm/Hg. The Syncrhomate can display RPM (I assume using piston pulses) which requires flipping a switch but don't most of us have an RPM gauge? I love bells and whistles and thought long and hard about the Synchromate but when it came down to it, the Carbmate does everything I need it to do.

Dick,

I looked at the Twin Max also...looks like basically the same thing and yes, these are much simpler than the twin gauge method.
