Last night I introduced my Lightning to Night Flight. All went well.
I departed Marana Airport at around 6:00 pm and the air was incredibly smooth! Nary a bobble. I flew East over the valley to the Catalina Mountains and then North and West around the Tortolita Mountains. The sun was setting which cast shadows behind the rocky outcroppings. The giant Saguaro Cactus cast long shadows like pointing fingers indicating the end of another day. City lights began to twinkle like Christmas Tree lights.
After the sun said goodbye, I headed back to the airport for full stop landings, (six in all). I clicked my microphone switch seven times and watched while the runway lights came alive. Pretty cool stuff. This was a good time to become current again for carrying passengers at night. The air was smooth and calm, the landings were good and life is great.
One word of caution. If you plan on using your landing lights to illuminate the runway....don't. I installed lights in both wings. They are worthless. Thank goodness for runway edge lights!

What about installing a landing light in the cowling? I never liked the wing lights as much as the ones in the cowl.
I think Linda has one in her cowl?

Jim,
You are right; it is slightly left of center on the bottom cowl. I have only done one night flight with it but it seemed to work well. I may have an opportunity to test it further in the next couple weeks.

Gary,
I have got a customer here that can change your mind on the light, I will ask if he will post (bill Please Post) about his lights he just stuck in the factory pocket. I bet you will only need one, and with 2 they will be able to see you in flagstaff!! I am not kidding.

Is it possible that it's your angle that the lights are mounted? I remember seeing buzz during the day when he'd turn his on and it looked like an airliner (albeit much smaller) coming in. Alot of the new LED Bulbs seem to be much brighter and use less energy than their older counterparts. Brian W.

In the dark, they do not point very far down the runway so removing them and raising the beam might help. However, they do not produce enough light to be useful.

Gary,
The light housing does not change, they are a zenon bulb that fits into the current housing and than has a little power pack behind it that simply wires to your power and ground.

I should do a better job reading the lists. I got H3 bulb replacements. Actually, I got two 55 watt and two 35 watt ballasts.
And I got two 6000k bulbs and two 4300k bulbs.
No, I'm not THAT interested in finding the perfect light, it was a screwup of sorts around Christmas. I mentioned that I wanted them, and managed to buy myself a set AND my wife got me a set for Christmas.
Good thing, because the 55 watt I got is just too much for that reflector. I installed the 35 watt. As to bulb temperature, I strongly recommend the 4300k bulbs over the 6000. The 6000k bulbs are just too white...kinda bluish. The 4300k look like daylight compared to the ugly yellowish (it won't look yellow until it's next to the HID light) original bulb.
So, I recommend a 35 watt 4300k H3 hid setup. I'm not sure if it will cause some radio interference, or I'd recommend the bulbs and ballasts I have. If you want to wait until I've flown with it, I'll be happy to provide details of the flight. If not...

That's where I got the 35 watt ballast and bulb. Just be sure to select H3 bulb type. BUT...I can't make any promises about interference or lack thereof
At $72.99 for TWO ballasts and bulbs, you can either put in two lights, or you can split it with another Lightning owner. Less than $37 each for about 3 times the light.
