I bought a kit and delivery is due in weeks, but I am thinking about picking up my 701 instead of having it shipped. I was a little surprised at the rates I would have to pay for a u-haul. I think when you count the truck, the airline ticket to get there and the gas I would end up spending around 1800 to 2000. This would be about the same cost I pay for having the kit crated and shipped.
Anyway, I have a wagon with a lot of space. By looking at the pictures on the website I think I could fit all of the kit in my car except for the larger skins and spar. I am thinking about putting a box on my car for the longer pieces and throwing everything else inside.
So my question to you good forum folks is : How big is the kit? Does anyone have a picture of a single kit ready for pickup? Is this a crazy idea? Any other ideas?

I built a simple 2x6 framed plywood box that was 4 ft by 12 ft and set it on top of my borrowed open trailer. Most of the parts went in my Yukon and the skins and spars went in the trailer box and then I just screwed the top plywood on at the factory. I picked it up in two trips, but I doubt you'd get the whole kit in one trip. The Fuse and Cabin parts are pretty bulky. Good luck.

I bought my kit from a guy in Oklahoma who had unpacked it but barely any of
it was started. Rudder and a wing started. Because it was unpacked it took
more room than a ready to haul kit, but it still took a lot of space. I
hauled it back in a 4 horse horsetrailer and a 4 door pickup and the trailer
was pretty full and the back of the truck was full, too.
A crated kit would be smaller, but still big. As Art said, I doubt you
could haul it in a single trip with a car or SUV.
I'd borrow or rent a cargo trailer. U haul is expensive, but often you can
rent a cargo trailer at tool places much cheaper. With the economy tanking
you might be able to rent one from a private individual or contracter
through an ad in the paper. If you see one for sale in the paper you could
offer to rent it from the seller. Or rent a used horse trailer from some
dealer. Sales are slow for them.
Where are you located?

Bengamin,
You're going to wreck your car. Go buy a small trailer, 4 x 8, foldable
Taiwan product and stand it up in your garage at one end. I've got one
and have used it
for over 20 years to haul engines, railroad ties and kids to and from
college each year. It will be cheaper than renting in the long run.

You can do it in a long wheel base pickup. No piece is over 8'. Just
have tarps and ropes/straps. They furnish cardboard to put between pieces.
Take care,

Benjamin:
I had my 701 and engine delivered to the local freight office, and it only cost $450 in 2004. Zenith has a great discount with Yellow Freight.
When they shipped my 601XL with engine in 2006, it only cost $549 Missouri to California.
When we were in Mexico, Mo, we talked to the local U-haul people, and they wanted $2000 to rent a trailer that it would fit. NO WAY!
I am sure the prices are greater now, but I would NEVER consider trailering it the whole way.
I used a 17 foot U-haul truck for half a day to get it home.......Fred N9701 N9601

It only cost me 1076.11 to have the entire 750 kit shipped all the way to my shop door in Alaska. This was a very good price on shipping.

First of all, wow what a response. Thank you all for your quick advise. I figure I need to explain my plan in detail. I have an old super-reliable honda civic wagon. It actually has quite a bit of room. I can lay a 8 foot board in with room to spare when I take out the passenger seat. I can fit a washer and dryer in the back and close the hatch.
So the plan was to build a 4x6x12 box and mount it on the roof and put everything else inside. I'm now wondering if I could put the rolled up skins on the inside and use one of the smaller u-haul trailers for everything else that won't fit. Unfortunately I don't have a truck, so I can't really use the bigger trailers. Some friends have trucks, but it's hard to ask to borrow someones truck for 4000 miles of driving. I'm just trying to figure out a way around this. It just seems like the prices are a more then a little high.
By the way I'm in Twentynine Palms, CA

Have you investigated picking up the kit at Quality Sport Planes in northern
California? They are the Zenith dealer for the west coast(run by Chris
Heintz'a son Michael). That is where I picked up my 601XL quick-build kit.

Hi Ben;
Have you checked with your local Uhaul, they sell their old trucks for low $ much cheaper than renting one. A full kit weighs over 700lb, I think that may make your Honda extremely top heavy.

A full kit weighs 700lbs? That must be including the single shipping crate.
Having just moved, and having emptied out my garage, I can definitively say that I had 853lbs of crate from ordering all the sub-kits.

When I picked up my kit I had Zenith box it, it fit just fine in a regular truck bed with a couple of feet overhanging past the tail gate. The box for the 701 was 3 ft high 4 ft wide and 12 ft long.

Benjamin,
I purchased an unbuilt kit, including a Rotax engine, from a guy who lived
above Fairbanks Alaska and trucked it from there down to California. My
understanding is that the original purchaser trucked it north from Mo.,
uncrated, on a single U-haul vehicle. To get from Alaska to the US, we
rented a heated hanger in Fairbanks and put all the pieces carefully into
about 5 crates, which we built. This took us 4-days. Then we purchased a
8'x16' flat bed trailer and ran it south. The load was about 3' high and
filled almost the entire flat bed surface. Only one piece was damaged enough
to have to discard.
I hope this helps you decide how to go.
Les

Thank you everyone for the advice. In the end I decided to just have it shipped. I was kind of looking forward to the whole trip going there and back, but in the end, I would rather be spending my vacation building rather then driving.
