The price for Rotax filters is really high. Will the Pure One PL10241 (or any of the suggested substitutes) clear the exhaust pipe on a 914?
Alternatively, the best price I've found on Rotax is $21.09 at California Power Systems. Anybody found a better price?

"Rotax" parts are expensive, even their oil filter which I think is made by
WIX. Rotax sent out a directive a few months ago saying that ONLY ROTAX
genuine parts are to be used on their engines. What this means to me is
that if an airplane owner doesnt follow this directive. and there is and
insurance claim on the aircraft, it may not be covered under your insurance
carrier since the manufactuer's specs werent followed.
Just food for thought.

Rotax filters are made by Champion overseas. Nothing special about it. Many people use the Pure One PL10241 or the Fram Tough Guard 3614. There are about 8 others. The Pure One is head and shoulders above the others including Rotax. Using a different filter is a personal choice. A Pure One and the Fram will not clear my exhaust header because it is about 1/2" longer than Rotax.

But Roger,
What about that notice from Rotax that ONLY genuine Rotax parts are to be
used on Rotax aircraft? I am sure Rotax notified you of this fact too.

Lockwood was selling their Rotax oil filters for around $18. I tried to check on line for you but their web site has been down for about 100 years. You might give them a call. Last time I looked in print ads they were the cheapest.

So does anyone know of a non-rotax filter that works (clears the exhaust) on
the 914?

I have never ordered from here so I don't know if they get you for extras or $shipping from Canada. But they claim they have Rotax 912/914 oil filters for under $15+ us dollars. http://www.ultralightnews.ca/fuelsystem/fuelfilters.html

Make sure you go with the Black (latest) filter, The early ones had problems with the steel return valve spring wearing through the top of the filter and causing a leak,

In an experimental installation, of course, you can legally use whatever you want.
I would assume an insurance co. would factor that into their risk when they grant you a policy - they should know full well they're not insuring a certificated aircraft that doesn't meet any certification standards.
As for the oil filter, in various service bulletins and so on that describe installing the filter etc., say things like "use rotax filter part no.... or suitable equivalent" (i.e. in SI -12UL96). I take that to mean an equivalent substitute over against the genuine Rotax is acceptable.
Also, for instance in SI-912-014-r2, they're specifically describing a "non-genuine Rotax filter". The picture looks like a filter labelled as a Rotax filter but it actually is not a suitable filter - it doesn't have a return valve installed in it.
I don't think Rotax is ruling out "suitable equivalents" in this SI, looks to me like they're going after a fraudulently labelled incorrect filter.
So, I dunno, its kind of contradictory. I'd be curious about the "or suitable equivalent" language in some of the bulletings over against the nothing other than genuine Rotax parts thing?
All that said, I'm normally very anal about following manufacturer recommendations. In my case, the filter I've had the most concerns about has been the Rotax (new black one). I've seen small bits of metal flaking off the threads left over from machining on one, another leaked profusely even when tightened down the to Rotax spec of 3/4 of a turn.
For that reason, I actually avoid the Rotax in favor of either the Mobile 1 or the Purolator (the purolator is the one I'm using now), neither of which give problems.
I'd rather protect my engine by using good parts and take the minor risk of non-genuine stuff like oil filters.
Of course, anything else, even down to hoses and for sure internal parts or external accessories, sorry it's the Rotax part no matter how expensive .....
But the oil filter thing, I'd rather use a better one....
