Hi guys,

I want to mount a com antenna on top.
The tape comm antenna I understand is not an option for the -10.

Now COMMANT has a veriation of models:
Which one can you suggest?

http://www.comant.com/showproduct.aspx?CN=44&SCN=59

Looking forward for your thoughts.

Cheers
Michael

The bent whip (either the CI-121 or CI-122, IIRC) is what I would
recommend for low drag and good price.

For a top mount consider the Comant CI-121 or the RA Miler AV-10. The
Comant CI-122 is for a belly mount com.

It's true that the bent whip antenna was 'bent' for ground clearance when mounted on the belly ...... but it works just fine on the top too, for those that are squeezing the bank account.

I don't see why the problems with the tape antennas would be any different in the -10. The only problem I'm aware of is that the comm antennas are vertically polarized, and the signal strength suffers when they're horizontal. OK, we're not talking 1/2 way around the world here. I hear transmissions a couple hundred miles away (vertically polarized antennas)when I fly ...... but I'm usually within 10 miles of an airport when I check in ...... so I fail to see the 'problem' with the tape antennas laying horizontal other than the antenna 'pointing' at the destination. So, just place the antenna sideways ..... like across the cabin top or bend it like that 'belly' whip. Help me out here guys!!! What am I missing???

Michael,
I wouldn't give up on the tape antenna just yet. I use one for my 2nd
comm radio and it works great. My bent whip on the bottom goes to the
primary radio, but I've had great luck with the tape and use it to talk to
ground control and Unicom radios without any issues. Plus it's the cheapest
game in town by a long shot. I ran the comm cord up the cabin support tube
and tie the shield to the mount screw and the center to the tape with one
piece of fiberglass to cover the tape and hold it in place.

Marcus,

How long is your tape? I did mine according to the instructions and it
doesn't work well at all. I had a bunch of Ham radio guys come out and look
at it - they put a meter on it and told me it is electrically too short for
the frequencies I was trying to use.

Thanks,
Ralph

Michael,

I glassed a VHF comm antenna into the cowling. It is oriented vertically and works great. More details and pictures from my previous post are located here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?t=6664

I said cowling... I meant cabin top. It is not removed quite as often as the cowling.

I honestly don't recall the length, but I ordered the "low drag" antenna for
$7 from Vans (Bob Archer???). I followed the directions closely so it is
whatever was specified. Best bang for the buck I've ever achieved with
avionics!

I've attached some pictures, there's not too much to it.

Marcus,

based on what I know and what was also mentioned before the com antenna needs to be as much vertical as possible. So how does your installation on the cabin ceiling work then?

Another consideration is the radiation from the antenna. IIRC correctly the
intensity varies inversely with the square of the distance between the pilot
and the source.

Unfortunately I cannot speak to the technical questions that have been
raised, and are pretty good actually. However, I can attest that it works
great and I haven't had any issues. My thought process was to give it a
try, the price is negligible and I figured if it worked great, if not then
you can't see it under the fabric on the cabin roof anyway so no real loss.
