N670CB changed hands Thursday. It was purchased by MCR Oil Tools, LLC and will be based in New Iberia, LA and Arlington, TX.

It is a beautiful airplane and the only remaining Grand Renaissance Shrike. It is equipped with the Merlin 350 hp. engines and the Merlin extra fuel kit.

Good to be back in a Commander again.

Kindest regards,

Bill

Hi Bill,

I take it that you are the captain of that beautiful ship now. If so, congratulations!

I saw it advertised on Controller and wondered what the performance gains are having the 350 hp engines in there and whether they are Continentals or did they retain the Lyc's. I have so many questions about the configuration, why was the conversions stopped, and so on. Could someone fill in the blanks?

Thanks

Nico

Nico,

The engines are Lycoming TIO-540's with intercoolers. They are the Merlyn installation. Merlyn also installed their extra capacity fuel tanks to give a total of 255 gal. The installation has only a single filler and there are no tank selector valves, only the two fuel/hyd. firewall shut off valves.

The previous owners made a good effort not to overload the airplane with "goodies" and it has a useful load of about 3,300 lb.. I believe that the pay load with full fuel is 1,668 lb.. (Merlyn increased the max. gross to 8,800 lb..)

The acceleration is impressive. and it will go fast.

Gary Gadberry installed the air conditioning which makes a great difference. My first airplane, a 500-B Commander, did not have air conditioning so I find the change very impressive.

The turbos have automatic waste gates with density altitude controllers and are very easy to manage. The avionics are impressive also: Stec-65 autopilot with altitude pre select, TCAS, Radar, Garmin 430W with XM weather, Garmin GMX 200 display, JPI engine monitor, digital fuel flows and a KX-155 nav comm. I have spent two days reading operating manuals.

It is a very impressive airplane!

Ban Yan did the Grand Renaissance conversion in 2000 and the pre-buy. That is a very impressive organization.

Kindest regards,

Bill
