Has anyone had experience installing a Scott tailwheel on a Yak 55M? If so, is there any special fabrication I need to be aware of?
Thanks,
Anthony.

Hi Anthony,
I have a Scott 3200 on my 55M. I love it. MUCH superior to the Russian
tail wheel, especially as regards pushing and pulling and steering
into/out of the hangar. Plus if an FBO has any tailwheel tires/tubes,
they have that one.
You will need to fab an adapter plate to adapt the Russian tailwheel
spring to the Scott bolt pattern. I will be out at my hangar on Monday
(unfortunately have to work tomorrow, and didn't get this until afte I
came back for today...) and will shoot you a couple of pictures. It is
appears to be a pretty straightforward machining job, so it shouldn't be
a big deal to find a shop that can do it.
Good luck,
Scott Poehlmann

Here are some pics of the assembly I had made. It bolts up underneath
the spring just like the original, using the the original holes,
etc... I had a bunch made. I'm not sure if the guy has any left
over. I could check if you're interested. I don't recall the cost
exactly, but I know they weren't cheap.

Hi Wesley,
thanks for the info and photos, this is very helpful. If there are any leftovers from the original run, I would be very interested in purchasing one.
Thanks,
Anthony.

Thanks Scott,
that is exactly what I am hoping to use on my airplane. Photos would be a great help.

Anthony.

Wesley,
Since you had this made, any chance you have some drawings for the piece?

I'll find out tomorrow what/if there are any more available. The
angle is set so that it is correct if you have gear extenders
installed (I did with Clevelands). If you don't have the extenders,
it's possible I could sell you the one that I have here. It has the
original angle (copied from the original tailwheel). I don't have the
model we did. It was done at the machinists facility. If he doesn't
have any more, I can create a new model from the one I have here.
These planes are a little tough for parts. I had to have aileron
bushings made as well. The availability wasn't good enough. If you
need some of those... I have extra sets. The easiest way to do a
quick check is to just to try and move your aileron at the tip
vertically. If you feel any play at all, chances are that they need
replacing.

Thanks Wes,
the previous owner installed Grove 500x5 wheels and tires. I don't think I have gear extenders, from what I can tell the axles are bolted directly to the base of the legs. What do the extenders look like, and what is their purpose? I will check my ailerons as you suggested and let you know if I need the bushings.

Anthony.

I'm having some issues getting in touch with the the guy I had making
them before. Hopefully I can see him next week or so. I thought I
had one of the prototypes here, but I guess it's not. I should be
able to find that one next week also.
The extenders normally are just some plate material that bolts to the
landing gear holes and lowers the axles by about 3". Most people
started using them to run the larger Whirlwind prop and still have an
adequate amount of ground clearance.

that makes sense. I think I have the extenders, but I will double check. Any chance you can provide a photo (sorry to be a pest)? Thanks for the follow up on the adapter plate, anything would help.

I found the one adapter I have here at home. It was packed away. I
have attached a pic of it. In the picture is a gear extender as well,
so you can get an idea of what they look like. This particular Scott
adapter is for a plane without the gear extenders. It will work on
one with them, it's just not perfect.

Hi Wes,
I am not sure if you received my previous email, but this is great news. Are you willing to part with it for a price? Or is there a way I can get the details to have one made locally?
Regards,
Anthony.

Wes,
I never saw a reply post on this, did you say that you had or could get some drawings on the Scott tailwheel adapter that was machined?
Please lemme know,

Mike,
The guy I was working with was supposed to get back to me. I just
spoke with him a few minutes ago, and lit a fire. He made it seem
as though the file was gone because it has been so long. However,
he's going to look. He said that if he had the file and the rest of
the parts from the initial run, and I bought them, he would include
the file (if he can find it). I'll keep you updated.

Ok. The guy got back to me tonight. He sent me a pic of the adapters
he has left (7 of them) and is looking for the digital file. I think
they are complete except for a counter-bore hole and a final
sanding/finishing. I'm trying to work a deal with him on all 7. If
it works out, they should be around $150ea with the final
sanding/finishing to be done by the buyer. They're made of 7075
Aluminum. They bolt up to the existing tailwheel spring on Yak 55 and
55M's with no modifications. If anyone is interested, please let me
know so, I can give him the go-ahead or not.
Thanks, Wes

The guy I was working with was supposed to get back to me. I just
spoke with him a few minutes ago, and lit a fire. He made it seem
as though the file was gone because it has been so long. However,
he's going to look. He said that if he had the file and the rest of
the parts from the initial run, and I bought them, he would include
the file (if he can find it). I'll keep you updated.
