Before charging off and buying from someone you don't know you should consider:
- Is the person here in the US in the business to sell yak parts? If yes then you should support him, if you don't he may be hard pressed to support you (or me) later when we need help in a hurry. A 50% profit margin goes away quickly when you start paying all the associated charges, not to mention the risks involved.
- Foreign sellers demand 100% prepayment.....do you know these folks?
- Have you given any thought to the process and costs involved with importing parts? Just to name a few they are; the cost of a forwarder on the other end, actual shipping cost, port charges, bunker fees, TSA import costs which include the new regs which state that everything has to be X-rayed (at the shippers expense), and worse if your cargo is selected for an "intensive" inspection it is yet another charge. Keep in mind that they can do what ever they please during an intensive inspection, cut holes, remove parts, ANYTHING they deem necessary to make sure your cargo contains no contraband. They bear 0 responsibility for damage!! Now if your lucky and you get through US Customs unscathed you still have the cost of the US broker who will handle the entry for you. Next depending on how the goods are classified you may or may not have duty to pay. Some items are free, some are dutied (at) 7 to 8% of cost, most are 1-2%. If the goods set at the port too long because your seller did not include the correct paperwork you pay a per day demurage charge. You still have the cost of shipping the cargo from the port to your location and all the risks of damage associated with that shipping (good luck if it goes via truck freight).
- Do you know if the parts you are buying are even serviceable, and if found not to be will these seller stand behind what they sell? I am sure your guy here in the states will stand behind what he sells.
- If you want it insured during transit it is an additional expense which is about 1.5 to 2% of stated value.
- Even if he does send you replacement parts FREE of charge it will cost you 20 to 25% of their value to get them to your door. So now you will have paid the shipping, import charges twice, and you open the box and find a problem again!! I am not saying that your seller is dishonest, or that any of this will happen for sure, but it can be a horror story. I have been in this game for over 20 years and full well know it can and does happen.
The guys who are parts vendors here in the US for the most part are not getting rich selling parts, we are here because we love the aircraft and enjoy the folks who fly them. I would encourage you to consider the cost involved to find, import, stock, and market these parts. I honestly think that if you consider the costs and the risks you will discover that the gent who is offering you your yak parts is in reality making only 20 to 25% actual profit on his invested dollar when it's all said and done, and he has 100% of the risk, personally I think he is under paid.
In my humble opinion you'd be wise to support him now so you can be sure he is there tomorrow, you/we all just may need him.
If you decide to go it alone and buy from Bulgaria instead of the US seller keep track of all the costs, then add a livable profit margin to the landed at your shop total and let us know what you find.
All the best from Omak where we have had 8 days in a row above 32 degrees!! YA hoo, spring has sprung!
Always Yakin,
Doug

I have found some parts I need for my Yak in Bulgaria for significantly less (less than 1/2) of the price than I can get in the US, but wanted to know if anyone else has purchased through this supplier:
"AvioServiceBG"Ltd in Bulgaria

Thanks.
