I am really struggling with the friction level of my nose strut on my 701. It just seems too tight even after trimming a couple of times. Top bearing alone is fine, and the friction levels rise after I tighten lower bearing bolts. Is there some comparative advice anyone can give me?

Art,
We have all been there, put a small amount of oil on it and go fly. It will loosen up on it's own after some use. It is moved by your feet which have a lot of strength and when in the air it will be easier to move than on the ground. By the time you fly off your hours it will be fine.

Art's comment got me thinking (a rear event). I was told that the plane with
the nose gear that collapsed used the 1080 heavy duty bungee on it (this is
heavier than the normal "1080"). Does Zenith ship the kit with the normal
strength or the heady duty bungee? Could a heavy duty bungee have
contributed to the gear failure?

Hi Art,
Having the nylon bushing, I assume you've got a tight fit there, but if
it slides at all, it should wear in better if that's all the contact
friction is about.
If you've metal dragging on any of the strut surface, you'd best clear
that part with some emery cloth or a round file. Perhaps the bearing is
being
brought out of parallel with the diameter of the strut when it's
tightened down and that would also cause increased friction.
Use some ink marker on the strut and see where the most marker collects
on the bearing and near surfaces. Also check the strut for shine and
ink removed to check where the rub is concentrated.
If the action is smooth, the friction is not a problem as it will ease
up eventually providing a good bearing alignment. Better than being loose.

On my CH801, I noticed a high amount of friction with the nose gear when
all the parts are bolted together. What I eventually discovered is that when
everything is installed the lower bearing plate is not quite at 90 degrees
to the gear leg. So when you tighten everything the bearing is not quite
aligned right. The fix in my case is to resurface the bottom of the bearing
slightly to correct the alignment on the shaft. It is a slight amount (about
.020) but enough to make the gear leg really tight. It is probably that the
lower plate is not bent quite enough. An easy fix, but also easy to miss.
