I know that this was probably some insane thread at one point, but after researching old posts on Yak-List I couldn't find anything substantial.

For a guy with just about all jet time (and first time a/c owner) I feel like I am finally getting a good feel for where I need to be mixture wise. In fact I think I was running too lean for the first few months of ownership, but I still have questions.

I'm getting a peak EGT of 760C and the engine seems to like about 25-35 degrees rich of this. (I don't have a FF gauge)

Can anyone recommend a good source of info on running the proper mixture on a radial? I've probed the internet but did not really find anything I thought was useful.

Again my intent is NOT to reopen a beat to death subject Confused

Keith, I have a single EGT probe on #1, and for want of a better number I've been running 50 degree rich of this. I also will be interested in other responses. ...Blitz

Well the first thing we do here at Vector Warbirds is to take her out at night and tie her down, damn that just sounds wrong!, well anyway then we run her till warmed up, go full power, bring the mixture slowly to full lean and have someone outside watch the exhausts, if yellow flames adjust the carb leaner until you get a nice clean blue flame with no backfiring. You can find the carb adjustment proceedures in the manual and air jet replacement.

We can run at cruise, 22" at 2150rpm and see 12 to 13gph fuel burn. Plugs look good and head temps run about 200C or less. We got no EGTs.

Byron,

I mistakingly indicated a peak temp of 760F and I meant 760 Centigrade.

If you are running Fahrenheit on your gauge you would be about twice my Celsius temp and therefore your 50 degree rich of peak would be just about the same as my 25 degrees.

I had heard the "50" rich of peak thrown around but if I set that in Centigrade I'm almost full rich.
