Bill-
Every little bit helps, if only in lower fuel usage over time.
Rearranging the location of accessories I spoke of is no big job, and in my
case, it's a done deal.
Here's a question for you and everyone else out there. Do you have a
roll bar, or are there plans for one? If you had to make an emergency
landing in a plowed field (Plenty of those around here) you might do a
beautiful job but still turn turtle at the last minute. In that case, you'd
better be able to duck REAL low REAL fast, because the only thing between
your head and the ground is a couple millimeters of canopy and the rudder.
Know all about the race-Yugo. Used to be part owner of a 1971 C-150.

Bill,
The only Zenith I've seen inverted was one that was tied down outside
in really bad weather.
Have yet to see a 601 that's gone gear up in any landing. Not to say
it can't happen, but
the frequency of this occurring seems to be quite low. This roll bar
issue was beat on rather
hard a year or more ago. There were no satisfactory solutions
advanced then either.

My FAA airworthiness inspector told me as he was inspecting my plane (in
2002) that he was recently asked to investigate a fatal accident involving a
601. I believe he said it was in FL were a 601 nosed over after landing
(think it went off the runway), killing the pilot. He was asking me if
Zenith has since added any type of roll over protection. Sadly I had to tell
him no.

I can appreciate that. Mine's upside down right now!
Maybe it's a phobia I have because in my flying life, (Many moons) I've
never flown a low wing. Need the rafters in the ceiling, you know.
Consider that fair warning. If I ever get this thing in the air, stay
away from Pennsylvania for about 40 hrs!!!!!!!!!!

• The recent fatal crash in CA when a wing folded
• A fatal midair in NY
• MA - Fatal crash when pilot lost control on first flight
• IN - Fatal crash when AC flew into a radio tower
• OH - Fatal stall / spin in the traffic pattern. CG slightly aft of rear limit.
• TX - Fatal stall / spin complicated by loss of engine power
• IL -Minor injuries when the canopy of an HD opened on takeoff and the pilot nosed it over in a pond adjacent the runway.
• WA - Serious injuries when engine failed after water takeoff and AC crashed into trees.
• NC - Serious injury when a radiator burst on takeoff filling the cockpit with smoke and blinding the pilot causing him to crash into trees.
• WA - Minor injuries when wake turbulence caused the aircraft to roll on takeoff with the result that a wing struck the runway.
• FL - Minor injuries when engine quit and aircraft flipped after landing in a muddy field.
• UT - Minor injuries following engine failure.

The reports make interesting reading.

Bill, what you say about a roll bar and inverted landings is a real concern.
I did consider such a modification and discounted it because of the weight and
the location that weight would have to be. If I had an 0-200 or 235 instead
of the lighter 3300 Jab the balance would not be an issue, but an additional
15-20 pounds of steel might. I read over a couple hundred NTSB reports to learn
how many fatalities occurred because of inverted trapped landings and just
could not justify the extra effort and performance on a tricycle plane. On the
other hand, if I was flying a tail dragger I would have a roll bar. Best

Tim-
This is the exact situation I was talking about. If you've done a good
job, you'll be making an emergency landing nose-high at minimum airspeed,
but if the nose wheel catches a furrow or chuck hole when it comes down
either the nose fork will either collapse or you'll turn turtle.
Impact in an inverted spin and nothing will save you but dumb luck.
