Man did an excellent job of saving his buns. He had everything
working against him long before the engine quit. After it quit, power
transmission wires, lots of trees, another power line, and then a
borrow pit that had more cast iron than a junk yard. Don't worry
about the airplane until you get yourself on the ground.
Great job.

Hi Robert
Thanks for sharing the video with us!!! I had a similar thing happen to me
with my T_Bird. I landed behind a House .The plane was bent up bad but I
only hurt my leg a little and cracked two ribs .

I shows you how far a dead engine will take you .... all the way to the scene
of the crash ....bet you'll get there 30 minutes before the EMT guys. etc.
Really - it is a "streaming video" so it's hard to tell how big it is.
Must be pretty large on the server.

Ed:
It is a 13.4mb Quicktime.
Shows an UL flight that terminated with an engine out. Good
educational clip.

Excellent video! This guy either has the right stuff or is extreamly lucky. I think a lot of both and nerves of steel. My impression is that he was flying to low for the area that he was flying over. I started to feel uncomfortable when I could see no good options to land. I would like to see a full screen version of this video. It is an excellent training video.

Hi all,
I don`t think I would be hanging around quite that low over all those trees.
Having said that, what a good job the guy made of the situation. Mainly
because he continued to fly the plane. He picked the spot he wanted and
flew the plane as well as he could to make it happen. In fact I thought he
was going to make it onto that rough track. He still looked as though he
might have enough height to make it when he suddenly hit the ground. Did
anyone else get that impression? Did he stall, or touch a wing tip?
Congratulations to him in any case.
Cheers
Pat

Pat, looks like he caught a left wing tip on something.
-which might be a preferable way to bleed off some speed
rather than whack one of those dirt piles dead on.
Any way to sequentially lose inertia is the best way to go.

Mike, the video is still there at http://nhexecutivecouncil.com/media-head/aerial/vid.engineout.htm you will need to have the latest quicktime video installed to see it. It is a rather large file if you are having trouble downloading it send me your snail mail address and I will send you a copy on a cd.

Steve,
Thank you for the link, it worked perfectly. Robert had sent me a link as well that worked also. I have 3MB cable, so speed was not the issue. I am not sure why the original link failed me.
I found this video clip very interesting, and well produced. Its always a great help to know how others react to events like this, that we all hope never occur. But, it behoves us all to be prepared, for this type of thing to happen.
I am no different, my very first flight around the patch in my then (semi) new Sorrell Hyperlight lasted about 2 minutes, then the engine failed. Luckly for me, i was still making patterns around the grass airfield i left from, and made a very smooth landing. I was even complimented by some spectators as to how cool i dropped it... rolled the plane right up to the hanger as a matter of fact. Not until i explained what happened, the engine quit, did they realize they had just witnessed an emergency landing. And on my maiden voyage with that craft! You can rest assured, i was giving much praise to my flight instructor, Ray Houge, who was sure to focus on the task of unintended landings while i gained instruction to fly my little biplane.
That was in 1987, the Hyperlight touted a less than reliabe 277 Rotax. I worried about those engines for many years... and now have one again. This time, a 503, i sure hope to not repeat that experience again, but you can be sure, i will practice dead stick landings as soon as i get this bird in the air.
