I didn't *make* anything today, but this week I used the "gravity press" (a patented Lendon process) to bend the nose skin for my HD's centre wing.
Primitive, but effective...

Ron, I looked for the gravity skin press on your kit log, but I couldn't find anything. PS nice work!

I'm working on the center panel. Having found the elusive 2 & 1/16" hole saw, I've started mating my console to an instrument bracket that I've modified.

Still working on it, but it's taking shape nicely.

Ron,

Your nose gear bearing block looks great!

The drawings and instructions say to drill and tap holes to bolt it to the support bracket. I was very leery of my ability to tap a hole in plastic and have it reliably hold the block in place. I saw a post about thru-bolting it instead and that's what I did. You have to use a Forsner bit to countersink the bolt heads into the top surface to clear the "arms" on the strut tube. (see photo) I also had to put an .016 shim in the front gap between the halves. Without that shim, I could not rotate the nose gear at all. With it, it is still tight, but workable.

I know it's just a piece of plastic but wow! I really am amazed at what you plans builders produce... simply amazed. There is a huge gulf between fitting kit-supplied parts or even producing simple parts from stock and actually manufacturing all of your parts with the precision and quality that meets or exceeds what the factory can do. It an extension of what I have told people about my plane when they seem doubtful about it. I tell them, "I worked on every piece as if my life depended on it. That Cessna out there was built by workers who may or may not be content in their jobs, using parts from the lowest bidder".

Keep up the nice work Ron.

I made four hours O.T. this AM at my boss’s request. Now, I am going home and try to make some progress on the interior of 52EB and make some seats! Then, I will make a mess as I try to finish the paint job on the fuselage. Then I will make an honest attempt to assemble this thing for final inspection. Then I will hoot and holler as I receive my pink slip!!!!!
Happy Building!!
God Bless!!

Pat and all-
I'm making the final electrical connections with the panel in place
before putting in the battery and powering everything up. It worked on the
bench. Famous last words.
1. I got the Homebuilders Help glass panel DVD after I was half-way
through doing it the hard way. In retrospect, Mark's way will save you a ton
of time. Check it out.
2. You can cut any size hole you need for the panel with a H/F - SKU
P37370 fly cutter, but you have to use a drill press and wood backing. The
main problem with the off the shelf tool is that the setscrews are garbage.
Replace them with decently hardened ones and you'll get good results for
about a $15 outlay.
3. I was pleasantly surprised to find that Radio Shack stocks .093 Molex
connectors. Type in "Molex connector" and you get nada. In desperation, type
in "Terminals" and on pages 6, 7, and 8 of the online catalog you'll find a
batch of really tasty connectors, cheap.
Picture of my console attached. Not everything is firmly screwed down
yet, which accounts for the warpage. I highly recommend Jeff Small's
suggestion to add a chunk of 3/4" extruded L to the bottom of the panel. It
really firms up the slab of Jello you're trying to work with.
To paraphase the old saying, "I'm not a fast builder, I'm not a slow
builder. I'm a half-fast builder".
It seems the list is a lot happier when it thinks positively.

Bill

Well I got my Nuvite aluminum polish today and had my front nose skin off while doing some work behind the panel so I thought I would polish it. See before and after photos.

I also finally got around to reserving my N number. (316JL)

That looks good, but it's a shame that, eventually, you will want to
paint about half to that piece flat black. The glare from the part of
that nose skin that ends up under the canopy will be intolerable
otherwise.

Brian
Thanks. I plan on painting it tomorrow. I thought it would be easier to polish the whole thing prior to painting. I needed to work out my polishing process on something easy.

How long did it take you, and what grade did you use? I use F9 for the

Bill,

It took about 1.5 hrs to do the top skin.

I did 4 passes with F9, 2 passes with C, and 1 pass with S. I used a Harbor Freight polisher with Nuvite wool bonnet for the F09, the HF polisher with HF wool bonnet for the C, and an orbital polisher with a cotton bonnet for the S.

Each pass got easier and less polish was used with each pass. It actually took less time than I expected.

Hello group ,I didn't make any parts today ,however I had a great day .I
flew my Sonerai to a local fly-in at The Lake Jackson TX. airport .There
were lots of planes there and my Sonerai got lots of attention ,but no
awards .I have decided that with any Van's RV planes on site during the
judging there is not much chance of other planes getting many awards .The
judges seem to favor these planes. This morning I installed an oil pressure
gauge ,next week my new prop will be sent from Ed Sterba .I will run my
Franklin engine for the first time in the next week or so ,hope all goes
well .

This is a great thread, because it gets us back to the reason we all joined this list.

I finally made my way through most of those 9,200 rivets. Yesterday I pulled my last fuselage rivet, and even managed to climb in the cockpit to make some inaugural inviso-engine noises. The pictures tell the story. Keep on building, guys.

Larry-
Agreed. Maybe we should make it a weekly feature. Another suggestion
would be a list of outlets for all those hard-to-find parts. To start things
off-
Oddball fuel fittings- Murdoch Industrial
Fuel valves- Discount Hydraulics
Obsolete schematics, etc.- Essco
Now, if some lister more enterprising than me would start an Excel
spreadsheet...

Note that if you are using Gmail, there will be some interesting "sponsored links" to the right of this email.
Gmail is sensitive to the contents of email, and uses it to select the adds it displays.
I am conditioned to ignore adds, but the heading "Carbide Jobber Drills" caught my eye...
