Yesterday I flew my 601XL from Wahoo, Nebraska to Grand Prairie, Texas. I'm so proud of the airplane as it performed flawlessly and burned a consistent 5 gallons per hour the whole way while flying through four states. I met some really nice people on the way down, stopping at Emporia, Kansas, Bartlesville, OK, McAlester, OK, Weatherford, Texas and finally Grand Prairie, Texas. I got rained on a few times and had to dodge some nasty weather but there was a tail wind the whole way and I cruised at 131 mph ground speed most of the way (115 IAS). I didn't run into any turbulence during the trip - it was a smooth ride all the way.
I mounted the camera behind me and turned it on for my landing in McAlester, OK. This stop was kind of sentimental because in October of 2003 I picked up my wing spars that Jason Isley made for me in Tulsa and put them on our company airplane at McAlester, then flew with them back to Omaha. They took up most of the walking room in the airplane and barely fit in the door. It was a great thing to fly them back to McAlester installed in the 601. I remember all the dreaming while I was in McAlester back then and now to live the dream yesterday. I can't stop grinning about that today.

Here is a video of my landing at McAlester:

After arriving in Texas I stopped at Parker County airport just outside of the Mode C veil of DFW to get ready for flying into a control-tower airport. The controller was super nice and helped me the whole way in.
For those of you in North Texas, I'm hangared at Grand Prairie for now but hope to be at Midway in Waxahachie when my name comes up on the waiting list.

Scott,
Glad to hear the good news about your flying experiences.
Texas? What happened? Job Move?
It sure has grown down there since I lived there in the 70's. Has Dallas Ft. Worth grown that far south or is there still a bit of country between?

Ron - Same company, new position. Moving back to warm weather has all in the family pretty happy since we are from the South. Eight long winters in Omaha was a character-building experience. Waxahachie has some wide-open spaces. I didn't want to live in a subdivision again with houses all around. Looking forward to a lot of flying to explore the North Texas landscape. There seems to be several builders here so I'm looking forward to meeting some of them in person.

Welcome to North Texas. I live in Van Alstyne (about 50 miles north of
Dallas) but my office is in Plano. I will hangar my plane at Sherman Muni.
Haven't done much work on my XL but still enjoy reading about everyone's
accomplishments.

Great to have you down here. Good BBQ at Stephenville!, and Gainsville for that matter. Also, you might check out Mghees Catfish TX OK border! Id love to stop by and take a look at your XL. Catch me offline if you get a moment.
I'm still plugging along and your site has been inspiration!
BTW, talk to me about those COLD winters come August in TX. One of those days wan you scald your hand on your seat belt buckle.

Jay Bannister hangers his "Li'l Bruiser" down South of Town, between your house and GP. I am up on the far North side of civilization, where the North Dallas Tollway ends. Danny is 30 minutes farther up the road. There are a couple of more builders over in Ft. Worth, and a guy rebuilding a damaged 701 at Lakeview airport (F69).
I haven't moved to a hanger yet but hope to do so over the next couple of months.
The few weeks of spring can be a bit gusty in DFW, but the summers are usually 4 months of calm air with half of those around 100 degrees. It will test the cooling abilities of your engine and yourself.
Great to have you around!
