When I built my Zodiac XL, I installed the factory "Landing Light Option" from Zenith.
As some of you may know, this contains two 100W incandescent aircraft bulbs (Wagner in my kit). Once I was finishing building and started flying, I realised that these lights weren't particularly bright but they were adequate for my needs at the time.
The current drawn by these bulbs (~8.3v) combined with my other lights (NAV+Strobe) and avionics was getting a little high for my Jabiru alternator (20A). Many Zodiacs have smaller alternators like mine, so this can be a problem for us.
I wanted to be able to leave my landing light on more often in the daytime to be seen. With the 100W one, I could not do this and get a decent charge at the same time!
To remedy this, I got a "Low Cost 35W High Intensity Discharge (HID) 'Xenon' Light" from Duckworks along with their "H3-ROUND-SPOT" Round enclosure that looks like a 100W light reflector.
To see the installation text and pictures, see the link on this page: http://www.lancegingell.com/lance/Zodiac_Airplane.html
Installation took minutes.
The new light consumes more like 3 watts, it is much brighter than the original and will last a LOT longer. I'm very pleased with my upgrade!
Hope this is useful,

Hi Lance,
Thanks for posting your info re the HID landing lights.
Can you advise on the compatibility of the HID system with your radio's? Was
there any RF interference?

Looks great I only have one problem with you installation. You attached the box with double sided adhesive pads? That is just begging to come loose and do some damage.
I'd attach it to the wing skin if I were you.

I think he meant they draw 3 Amps not consume 3 Watts. My HID lights
are rated at 35 Watts each and put out more light than 100 Watt
halogens. The startup surge current will blow a 10 Amp fuse
eventually, but the steady state draw should be about 3 Amps. I think
I am using 15 Amp fuses to supply mine.

I have never had any interference with my installation. I have a set
of HID off road lights from JC Whitney in my plane.
