yakkers,

I am in Red Bluff, California picking up my Yak-54 (Russian Thunder - www.russianthunder.com) from the paint shop, Cardan Aircraft.

The Yak-54 doesn't get discussed here very often because it is such a rare airplane.  I enjoy lurking here and picking up little bits of info.  A lot of the stuff that concerns 52 and CJ drivers applies to the 54 as well.

Anyway, I posted a blog entry about it on my R/C site and thought some here might be interested.

Also, I highly recommend Cardan Aircraft for your paint and restoration needs (www.cardanaircraft.com).  I gave them a huge list of items to work on.  They tell me this is the largest project they've done.  I'm very happy with what I see now and will definitely use them again.

Jim

Hi Jim,
They did a wonderful paint job on your YAK .
However one of your pictures did get my attention. View # 51 shows written in
English a value of 2100 psi. That is about three times as much pressure as I have see on
a yak or cj. Does your air tanks really carry that much pressure?

Terry, you sure do have good eyes!

I looked for what you were talking about and found it. I am going to hazard a guess on what happened here. The Russian value is wrong too... It lists 150 kilogram/centimeter squared. Which....converts very closely to 2100 PSI. I almost purchased a YAK-54 at the Worlds held in Lakeland back in 2004 (stupid me for not doing so ) and it had the standard Russian air system. If you measure Kilogram/CM2... A value of 50 ... Not 150 .... Crosses over to a value very close to our standard of 730 + or - PSI. Could someone along the line slipped and allowed a Russian Letter to be translated into a numeral "1" when it should not have been?

Even if someone put in a scuba tank rated to this pressure (2100 PSI), you'd still have to regulate it down to 700 or so for the air starter... But I doubt that was done because the original fill port is still being used, and all the air lines would also have to be upgraded to handle that kind of pressure.

Anyway, 50 Kg/Cm2 not 150 would be about right...

Very impressive catch.

Mark,
That was a good analysis of how that incorrect marking came about.
