Hello list
This is my first posting since joining last fall.
I purchased a used kitfox V and have just now started flying it.
I am having problems with the lower exhaust pipes cracking after only a few hours of operation. The airplane has 270 hrs on it of which I have put on 35 hrs. The engine is a NSI 118 HP (the Japanese truck motor) unit with the CAP prop. The exhaust system is the stock SS unit that came from NSI. The cracking is in the lower pipes just above the exit from the cowl. Does anyone have any ideas for an alternative exhaust system from a good reliable provider? Or an alternative fix other than having the thing welded every 20 hrs? Am I running it too lean? Would that cause the cracking? The plugs are brown.
Thanks much

Is this the pipe(s) that leads out of the cowl? How is the pipe(s)
supported to prevent vibration? Can you send a pic?

Rick

Bob:

I can't say what the fix is other than having it welded, but I've had an
identical problem with my 100 hp EA81 from NSI. The fellow who welded it
(both times) seemed to think it might be due to sudden cooling. Certainly I
can't see where there's any stress whatsoever on the pipes.

Hi, I had the same problem after I returned from Oshkosh last year, mine cracked at the same point! I had the support mod from SS but the exit port was to long because I had an extension on that end. I cut the extension shorter and have not had any problems since! make sure yours is not too long, and you might need to install the added support bracket.
