In the Mi-2 helicopters we are restoring the airspeed indicators go to 500 km/hr even though Vne is something more like 200 km/hr.  My friend said this was like his old car that had a speedometer that went to 160 even though the car was scary at 80 mph.  Smile

The short question is if we replace these with airspeed indicators that go to maybe 120 knots (apparently helicopter pilots can only think in knots) C will they simply work C or are airspeed indicators matched to the air system in an aircraft?

Obviously the other choice is to simply reface them C but everybody agrees that an airspeed that goes to less than half the gauge for Vne seems like a waste of a lot of dial space.

Unless the airspeed indicator in the helicopter is connected to something in addition to the pitot system (ie: normally a single line connected to the rear of the airspeed indicator), you should be able to replace it with and it will simply work.

OOPS! I was thinking Altimeter. Not airspeed. Too early in the morning. Sorry about that.

The altimeter is connected to the static system only. The airspeed indicator is connected to both the pitot and static system. Hopefully my brain is thinking correctly now. Smile

I'm almost positive you can go with any airspeed indicator. The ASI
measures pressure and is simply calibrated to indicate whatever pressure
it sees. In my Yak-50 is an ASI that measures all the way out to 1100 km/h
(or something ridiculous for a Yak). It is from a a MiG. It works just
fine.

How long 'til the helicopter flies??

So the post-coffee question is... will it work?  Smile  Or is the airspeed indicator in some way calibrated for the aircraft?

Not quite awake C either C

First Mi-2 helicopter has its airworthiness C has flown off phase I C and goes to its first airshow this weekend!

Both Mi-24s have had all but 4 (2 each) of their *60* hoses (fuel C oil C hydraulic C whatnot) replaced (all braided stainless "forever" hoses -- price = ouch).  Waiting on the 4 hoses and then a little weight and balance jigging (or! anybody just happen to have a mock-up of the quad 12.7mm Yak-B Gatling gun?) and it's off to the races with the FAA.  Unfortunately the only date we have on the hoses is "soon".  Smile

JB, The A/S indicator in a helicopter works exactly the same as in a fixed wing platform.  Ram air and static pressure. When I was in A&P School, we took the A/S indicator out of an old Bell 47 (of MASH fame) and installed it in J-3 Cub while we were waiting on a new indicator for the Cub. The one difference b/w helicopter ops and fixed wing ops with respect to A/S indications is placement of the pitot tube and indications at a hover.  Sometimes, at a hover, one will see the airspeed needle jump around because of the induced flow being ingested by the pitot tube. Otherwise - same same GI. JB (Jon Blake)<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
