Dear Listers,

I'm about ready to replace the internal time/date battery in my Garmin 296.

I would like to know what size soldering iron would work best for that delicate job.

Those who have done this ... are there any special approaches to take such as maybe connecting tiny wires to battery then solder the wires to the circuit board? My new battery is from Digi-Key and has tiny solder prongs fused to it.

Should the 296 be updated before I replace the battery? I've never updated since since new, that's been 3 years now.

Thanks,
Jerry

I had two soldering irons and I just used the one with the smaller tip. With the battery that you have you do need to do any thing to it. No need to update before the battery swap. Just make sure you are software is update after you finish, not your databases but your software. Follow the directions on my website (link below) and look at the pictures on my picasa web album.

Thanks Bobby,
Your online procedure and pictures will be a very sufficient source for replacing the 296 GPS internal battery. Thank you for developing this for the RV-list. You just saved me enough to put about 75 gallons of LL through the 4.
Regards,
Jerry
