I did it a few months ago.

Each round trip of application and rejection takes a couple of weeks. Perhaps 3 weeks.

The more interesting question is how many round trips do you need to complete the process. The bureaucrats at FAA registry are absolutely incredible. They can come up with reasons to reject your paperwork that you would never have imagined.

My registration was relatively quick at 3 round trips. The last rejection was because under manufacturer I only included my last name - just as it is engraved on the data plate. They wanted my whole name. There went another 2-3 weeks. I think the whole process took me about 3 months to complete.

Good luck,

Paul
XL grounded

P.S. If you admit you built your plane from a kit rather than random parts that means another rejection if you don't include a "Bill of Sale" for the kit. The normal invoice used in the business world isn't good enough for our heroes at FAA registry. It has to say "Bill of Sale".

Assuming you have your 8050-3 form (i.e., your N number has been
assigned) it shouldn't take more than two weeks. At least, that's how
long mine took. The only tricky blank to fill in was "Airworthiness
Directives" in part B of form 8130-6. At the advice of the EAA, I
filled in "2004-7." The FAA office in Atlanta changed it to "Biweekly
2009-10 May 11-2009." I used the "Step-by-Step Certification Guide"
from the EAA. It was invaluable. If you're using a DAR to do your
inspection, ask him/her who his contact is in the FAA and mail the forms
directly to that person.

Hope this helps.

David:

Mine came back really fast - about 1-1/2 week if I remember correctly. The waiting comes if you want the FAA to inspect your airplane. My guy took three months to fit me in. If you hire a DAR it can be much faster, but I think it is kind of pricey. The FAA guy was free.

You forget about all the waiting you get that pink slip in your hands!

Good luck!

The price of a DAR must depend on who it is. I've heard numbers like
$400 for an inspection, but mine cost me $90. Not exactly free, but not
very pricey, either. Of course, he lives right on the field where I
keep my plane, so that may have had something to do with it.

What date does the database show it was issued? It may haven't gotten lost in the mail. I got mine in about 10 days after I mailed it.

Call this number and ask the FAA where it is. (866) 762-9434

The DAR can charge pretty much whatever he thinks his/her services are worth. $90 is a real bargain. The norm is around $400. Some FAA offices will do the inspection (free) but some claim to not have the manpower. It was along time ago (1999) but then the Cleveland Office sent out an inspector to certify my RV, didn't charge anything and it only took about 2 weeks to get an appointment. I was about 75 miles or so from the Cleveland office at the time.

The guy who is going to do mine for $500. I know that is at the high end of the spectrum but I've heard nothing but good things about him. He pre-does a bunch of the paperwork that the applicant would have to do.

Also the FAA inspector who gave me his name and number told me that he would be happy to come down and do it for free but there are some drawbacks.

He'd probably would be able to make it for a month after I try to set a date.

If there is any problem that is found that would cause him not be able to issue the AW certificate and I could make the fix real quick he would end the inspection and I would have to reschedule again once the problem was corrected.

Basically, at least in Arkansas, the FSDO doesn't want to be in the inspection business. Don't get me wrong. They will do them and they will be nice guys but they aren't as flexible as a DAR. I don't want to risk a multi-month delay once I finish my plane and am wiling to pay not to.

I think mine was mailed 2 work days after issue. If it is the same with you that makes the 16th the mail date. I'd give them till Tuesday and call them.

Never under estimate the slowness of the USPS.

I was quoted $100.00 per hour including the DAR's time to drive to and from the hangar, with a $300.00 minimum. That was back in 2003. I decided to wait on the FAA guys from the Baton Rouge FSDO (about 55 miles away form my town). Went with the same choice again lately when the Papa Goose was inspected and certified.

I paid 400.000 and was happy. After all he holds my ticket to fly
my thinking is this,
"Market rate is was the market rate is. AM I going to not pay a Guy what he wants and keep my project stalled for another two months, or do I pay the guy to take half a day out of his life to inspect and get my plane ready to go?

I say pay what they are charging, its typlically fair and move on, to what we desire, flying!

Juan
