Although it is summer, temperatures are still unusually low here in the
Netherlands. So when I had to bond something inside the cockpit, I put a
small heater in it to get it cured. Temperatures went up to almost 40
degrees Celcius (which is just a tad over 100 F I think).
After this, the gas struts started to pop out of their ball fittings. I
got plastic end sockets with my kit.
The temperature during the curing of the epoxy was way lower than you
could expect during a summer day on the tarmac, so I guess this problem
must not be uncommon.
On the Europa website, I saw that they also offer metal end sockets. Has
anyone experience with these? Would that be a cure for my problem?

Frans-
I just installed them and they will not come off the ball no matter what I try. There is a small clip on them that appears to hold the fixture to the ball, but it still won't come off the ball when you remove it. They will probably fix your problem.

Are you talking about the metal end sockets, or the plastic ones? The
plastic ones I received with my kit were never strong to begin with, but
time and heat have deformed them enough to allow the ball to pop out
without any effort.
If the new plastic ones have a clip then that would suit my needs too,
otherwise I will just go for the metal ones.

Frans,
Yoy may find that the metal ones do not fit onto the "old" type of gas
strut. I had this problem having bought metal ball ends.
I eventually used a small piece of locking wire, twisted around the plastic
socket end and the ball, which prevents the ball and socket from
disengaging. My "old" struts and balls are still in use and working fine
with this fix.

The metal ends were delivered with new balls also. Everything from where they screw into the gas struts was replaced, so you are replacing the end and stud.

Just looked, I have the plastic ones. Is Europa replacing them with metal ones?

Hi Dan,
No, the plastic ends are the standard but you have the option to buy the
metal ends if you wish.
I started this all off years ago when my plastic ends started popping of in
the wind and at other inappropriate moments and managed to source metal ends
which have worked well ever since. Europa now supply these metal ends to
order. I got a set for Jim Puglise. If you want some I could possibly bring
some to the States when I come next Monday to Boston. I would need to know
quickly as I would need to get them down from the factory.
How is the build coming on? I guess you must be getting close to the great
day.

The metal sockets and ball were an upgrade from Europa they are far superior
to the old plastic ones, but be cautious, they are slightly longer than the
original and the Strut can bottom out before the door is closed, mine did, I
ended up having to cut a little off the end of the socket and retap.

I had similar problems with plastic sockets.
The P2 sideĀ“s ball popped almost always out when opened the door.
I just changed them between (P2 to P1 and P1 to P2) and that made a one minute trick.
I do not know why. After it/they have never popped out.

If anyone needs new plastic ends, I have 2 left from when I changed to metal and will ship them to the first address I receive.
