Attention Zenith builders and flyers in the DFW (Texas) area.

If there is enough interest, we plan to have a breakfast meeting on July 18 at
Hicks Airfield (T67), fly in or drive in. There are a whole bunch of us in
various stages of building 601s, 650s, 701s, 750s and 801s in this area and it
would be great for all of us to meet one another and talk about our passions
(and our perils).

If interested, please let me know, on line or off.

Thanks - Jay Bannister 601XL "Lil Bruiser"

SOUNDS GREAT!! NICE LITTLE AIRFIELD, WITH A GOOD LITTLE CAFE (RIO CONCHO AVIATION). I'M ANXIOUSLY AWAITING! MY 650 HD IS SOON TO HANGAR OUT AT T67 ALONG WITH ANOTHER 601 BUILDER WHO IS NEARLY COMPLETE. REAL NICEFOLKS PLUS AVERY TOOLS IS LOCATED OUT THERE, BUT THEY ARE USUALLY NOT OPEN ON SAT. NEARBY IS 52F WHICH HOSTS THE BLUE HANGAR CAFE (BEST PANCAKES IVE EVER HAD). TOOK DAD THERE FOR FATHERS DAY AND ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE!

LET ME KNOW IF THERE IS ANYTHING I CAN DO TO HELP OUT, IM PRETTY FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA.

Great idea!! It's been hard the last couple of days with the heat to work in the garage on the plane but with all of Scott update it has keep me motivated to get this bird build and go flying. I second Mike opinion it's a nice little airfield and they have good hamburgers at Rio Concho Aviation. See you all there.

I've marked my calendar and plan to be there. I had a great flight from Grand Prairie to Eagles Nest this afternoon. The tower guy was great as usual. He always treats me like "this is your airport and I'm clearing everything for you to take off - the runway is yours five-zero-lima - enjoy the Texas skies." He calls me five-zero-lima.

I got up to 2,000 feet in a few seconds it seemed (first time flying alone in a while and she climbed like crazy). I pointed toward Midlothian on the GPS and hoped I would find Eagles Nest visually. A flew by the Cedar Hill Towers at eye level and took a few pictures with a bright, blue sky above and Joe Pool lake below. It was spectacular. I noticed a small jet near my elevation turning in front of me about five miles away! Before I knew it I had eyes on Midlothian airport but where the heck was Eagles Nest? I started looking around and noticed I was just off the end of the runway. I called downwind for runway 17 but I don't think anyone was listening. It is a narrow runway with a hump in the middle and the phone number in big letters on the runway. When I was on final and a little high like I always am, I noticed a power line at the end of the runway that dove underground just wide enough to avoid the runway. The runway looked like a sliver it was so narrow. It seemed like I was screaming fast when I got over the numbers but I was indicating 75 mph. It must have just been the narrow runway but it still seemed fast.

As I was flaring I noticed a hangar open to my left with about six guys sitting up to look at me as I screamed by. I eased her down and did a pretty fair squeaker, raised the flaps, turned off the lights and rolled to a stop at the end. Great experience for a Tuesday afternoon on a beautiful day.

I'm attaching a picture of the Cedar Hill Towers off my left wing.

How are those polished wing skins doing for you guys down there in the Texas sun? Do you catch a lot of reflections off those wings? Do they have any effect on how hot it is in the cabin?

Thanks,

- Pat

Scott, to better visualize your trip, I used Google maps, and managed to locate the towers:

I believe I did not find your destination - Midway Regional was the only airport I could see:

Thanks for the report, great motivation!

Carlos,

Eagles Nest is an airpark and looks more like a residential subdivision than an airport. It is about 3 miles North and a little West of Mid-Way Regional airport. The towers are still North West of Eagles Nest. Eagles Nest is 2TS6 on a sectional.

The hanger that Scott is in is the second one from the South East corner. My airplane is in the next hanger to the North.

Carlos:

It is a very small airport community just north of Midway Regional (Midlothian/Waxahachie airport). Go to your second link, then type "Eagles Nest Airport, Midlothian, TX" in the "B" location. Then zoom in on the "B" location you will see it. It looks like a subdivision street, the runway is so narrow. If you keep zooming in, you can see the phone number and airport name written in big letters on the runway. You can see the runway numbers at each end with a "PVT" above them.
