Anyone used these? The material is quite a bit thicker than what you get from Kitfox. Whereas you're supposed to wrap the OEM cords around the tubes 6 times, measuring out the diameter of the HighWing cords across the available tubing length, looks like 4 loops will be about max.

I make my own, cost about 1$ a foot for mil spec bungee.
Each bungee 5 feet long - 6 wraps no trouble and work great. I don't use those big nico crimps either. Mine have proven to be tough and never let go.

Dave

What are you using instead of nicopress then?
Do you just tie a knot or do you have some other clamping device?

I use wire - I think it about 1/8 or 5/32 . You crimp them on the bungees .

Bull rings - what ever -- they grip and I tested them to 1500 lbs on ends

Look at any other bungee you buy -- they all the same

Ever wonder what the color codes on the bungees means?

http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library%5CrgAdvisoryCircular.nsf/list/AC%2043.13-1B/$FILE/Chapter%2009-10.pdf

The color code is on page 9-2. I tried to copy and paste but the table came out scrambled.

Here's what it says.
From 43.13-b

"The cord is color coded to to indicate when it was manufactured and to determine the life of the cord. According to MIL-C-5651A, the color code for the year of manufacturer is repeated in cycles of 5 years. Table 9-1 shows the color of the code thread for each year and quarter year.

Years ending with:
0 or 5 Black,
1 or 6 green,
2 or 7 Red,
3 or 8 Blue,
4 or 9 Yellow,

Quarter:
1st - Red,
2nd - Blue,
3rd - green,
4th - yellow

The color coding is composed of threads interwoven in the cotton sheath that holds the strands of rubber cord together. Two spiral threads are used for the year coding and one thread is used for the quarter of the year sheath, e.g. yellow and blue would indicate that the cord was manufactured in 1994 during April, May, or June."

I guess that might be 1999 or 2004 now too.

Can you explain a bit more or post a picture of how you do it.

Regards

So the colot tells us how old it is but does anyone know the service life of mil spec bungee cord?

The kitfox gear should be tight up against the fuselage when two people are on board.

I have heard of Cubs going for 20 years or more.

From 43.13b:
"a. Old aircraft landing gear that employs
a rubber shock (bungee) cord for shock
absorption must be inspected for age, fraying
of the braided sheath, narrowing (necking) of
the cord, and wear at points of contact with the
structure and stretch. If the age of the shock
cord is near 5 years or more, it is advisable to
replace it with a new cord. A cord that shows
other defects should be replaced, regardless of
age."

Sorry about the late response. The bungee cord is mil-spec Type I cord of 3/8" diameter. They are the dimension of the original Kitfdox bungees. As I recall, there was a time when Skyster sent out a thinner bungee but required more wraps.

When you wrap these, you will find that there will be overlap on at least one wrap.

The bungees are returnable if for any reason you are uncomfortable with them.

I looked but have no pics of crimping the bungees.
Here is a finished one with tape on it . I was out of heat shrink at that time.
