I am new to owning a CJ. The plane has a very strong fuel odor in the cockpit. It is not present after the plane has been sitting in the hangar even with the canopy closed. I've opened the access door for the header tank on the belly and it is dry. Not weeping from the wings that I can see either. The smell becomes noticeable after engine start and does not go away. So I have been suspect of something forward of the firewall but find nothing leaking there either.

Any ideas are welcome as to where to look.

Thanks,

Craig

Check to make sure that the fittings at the primer are secure.   Also check to make sure that the wobble pump is not leaking.  To check both of these items remove the right hand kick panel in the front pit.  The wobble pump may be leaking fuel when you pump up pressure on start up, same with the primer.  Let me know what you find.

Craig,
Have you looked at the fuel pressure senders which are located on the back side of the firewall on the right? Remove the large inspection panel on the right and look on the back side of the firewall, down low toward the bottom-right and forward of the false firewall. They should be painted yellow in the center. Sounds like it pressure related.

Craig,
I would start with the primer.

Thanks to all for the advice.

We checked out the wobble pump and primer and they checked out fine. Removed the plate to check the transducers and ran the engine. The person observing said it looked like someone was taking a piss - not just a drip (like an old guy), but a spray (like some young buck) of fuel.

The plane has recently had some new avionics placed in it and a new fuel pressure transducer was put it. The installer put a 1/8 inch thick washer against the firewall and a fitting from the fuel line to the transducer. So, when the fitting was tightened, it snugged against the firewall and washer but did not seal the line. It was nicely safety wired in place too.

So, that problem is solved!

Thanks again to all who responded. I am actually glad it is not the wobble pump or primer as those look a bit more difficult to fix that the current problem.
