Hi ray

I'm only 20 mi north of the arctic circle....lol Kotzebue here. myself and two other A&P are building 3 701's. Next time u come through stop bye the Bering Air shop. Were scratch building and so far the rudder, horizontal, elevator, and spars are done for all three planes....we started in Oct. and love the building progress. Ive read about a couple of 701's in anchorage that belong to the local EAA members but haven't seen them yet. Good luck on the build (I'm loving it.....even the mistakes) and ill try to answer your Q's if you throw me slow balls.

Great! I usually fly direct to Anchorage. But maybe I can make a side trip on one R&R. Right now I'm putting together plans to move my shop tools up to Wasilla from Cedar City UT. Will be making the trip next month... Renting a U-Haul! Whew that will make Alcan trip # 15! I Must be nuts... Confused

Well I count 7 full ribs and 3 rear only ribs on that front spar in the pic. And the spar tip looks extended as well.

Great eyes Kevin

Wings stretched 18'' or 3' overall I'm impressed u caught it.... False ribs are made out of .016.
Were going with the vg's and lengthening the the wing a little.

So the ribs I under stand but how did u figure out the length? Were u looking at the tip length or rib spacing?

Dave,
The spar tip is clearly longer, but as John knows I am concentrating right now on the wing so I have been looking at a lot of 701 spars, both long wing and standard.

John the pic is in the message before my comment.

we just went with JG's idea from stolspeed for the length and the 43.13 for the splice/doubbler. The false ribs was just easier than the L angle idea for anti-oilcaning we already had the formers and .016 ribs makes the weight negligible.

PS sorry for the hyjack Ray

So where are you in your project and what have you decided on your wings

Gday Wing Builders,

Our extended 701 wings are still going well, no problems. Wouldn't ever want to go back to the short wing.....

If you're building a wing from scratch, how about having a look at the plans for a 750 wing. That would be heaps strong for a 701. I think it has a longer spar, so doesn't easy apply to extending an original wing, but worth a look just for reference. Would anyone with 750plans like to do a comparison with the 701 wing??

If the attachment fittings are the same, I'd like to see Zenith offer the 750 wing as an alternative for the 701. That would make the 701 into an even better STOL machine. The old adage: "....For good STOL you need lots of power and lots of wing....". Got lots of power now with the 912S -matched with the 750 wing would be tops. Especially for floats.....

The long wing is also really good for matching with engines with marginal thrust. Theres a rule of thumb in aircraft design that says that power required for straight and level flight is inversely proportional the square of the span loading. So for the same weight, that becomes inversely proportional to the square of the span. ie For a 701 standard wing at 27 lengthened to 30 - 27 squared divided by 30 squared = 0.81. So it would require only 80% as much power to fly the longer wing, leaving the rest to contribute to climb. Climb at 40 kts was measured to be 100fpm better with our extended wings. See http://www.stolspeed.com/longer-wing To get the effect of 20% more power by only adding a few pounds of wing weight is real good value. And it makes a heck of a difference which you feel right away when you try it!

Carry on building, it'll be worth the effort......

JG

Ray , the high jack was my doing, sorry.
The tail is done and the cabin side are done the wing ribs and flaperon ribs are done, just getting ready for the spars. Gotta build a bench riveter first.
Mine will also be ~400mm longer with the larger/thicker wing doubler and .125" extrusion. I may copy the spar attach points that Savannah uses as well. The .125" extrusion is just due to cost considerations for shipping. And I will not be building slats.

thanks for the words of encouragement, and you will get an order for 3 sets of vg's and tail feathers when we are a little closer to the finish line.
