As a skydiver with 2000+ jumps, I would tell you not to buy a canopy that is more than acouple of years old. The sun erodes cAnopies. Most containers have limited lifes as well. I own a couple of great looking rigs that cannot legally be repacked because the manufacturers have told the FAA that they do not support rigs older than 10 years. Look great but not legal. That will not impress your local faa ramp checker. Be sure to have a qualified parachute rigger look at any rig before you buy!

P. S. I would not put a 40 year old canopy on my back. Period. Even if by some miracle it is legal.

Agreed!  They are best used for sun shade at a Saturday afternoon BBQ. JB

There is a FAA tensile pull test for fabric, regardless of age.  Sometimes new stuff is worse than 40 year old.  When it comes to what you support your life with, a great packer (rigger) can be a life saver.

With the UV coated nylons (in modern chutes) there is a process called hydrolysis that delaminates the coating and the filaments begin their own aging process without regard to the calendar.  So keep them cool/dry with low humidity.  color changing desiccant packs found in engine spark plugs can help.
