I lost a close friend, a wonderful aircraft designer, a man I have always
had a great deal of respect for, and a man who always supported how I built
and flew his airplanes, good or bad.
God speed Homer Kolb.

Homer passed away this morning.>>
That is really sad news. Although I never had the privilege of meeting Homer
from the comments which have cropped up on this list from time to time he
was an extraordinary man.

Homer came to TNK's flyins over the last several years.... My
impression was that of a Kind, gentle, principled , unassuming,
understanding man...Great inner strength built likely on his(as I
recall?) Amish or Mennonite beginnings... The world has too few... Herb
My secret hope ...was....that he would install vortex generators
on one of his planes!!

As far back as I can remember my childhood hero was Chet Atkins. He once said, "Years from now, after I'm gone, someone will listen to what I've done and know I was here. They may not know or care who I was, but they'll hear my guitars speaking for me." Long after Homer Kolb is gone his little planes will still be singing his song. They'll know he was here and what he did.

I had the pleasure of meeting him a few times at the S&F. He seemed to
be just a super nice guy,and he also loved John Deer tractors which also
made him a great guy. They were my favorite tractor as well.I grew up on
some of them.We will all miss him.

I have to say I am saddened by this news, all of us here are directly here because of him, and we literally will continue to be in his company anytime we look or fly our Kolb aircraft. How old was he? I thought there would be plenty of time to meet him.

That is a shame, but he led a successful life. Building airplanes and flying them your entire life, and seeing the company you started keep selling your designs until the last day. It does not get much better than that !
The Kolb Quad is really cool, is there any more information on that plane anywhere ? That must have been the first Kolb, I would like to know what year and how it flew.

Homer had triple bypass heart surgery about 13 years ago. Recently he was
having some chest pains when he would walk out to the mailbox. Test showed
3 arteries had some blockage. Stents were installed in two of the arteries,
but the 3rd couldn't be accessed. The 3rd artery was to be fixed with
robotic surgery which does not require the chest to be opened. I visited
him in the hospital after the stents were installed and he was doing very
well. I was impressed with how calm and relaxed Homer was, not only this
time but also before his previous surgery 13 years ago. He had some
complications on his leg where they entered the artery for the stents. The
artery was leaking and resulted in swelling. The first attempt to fix the
leaking artery was not successful. Then a day or two later, it was
repaired.
After the surgery on the 3rd artery, there was a complication (I forget the
term) and they were working on that. The next day (Saturday) it was
reported that there were more complications ... he was experiencing a
decrease in kidney function and some blood pressure problems.
Homer was a prince of a man and I will miss him greatly. Please keep his
wife Clara in your thoughts and prayers.
Dennis

Always harder when "one of the good guys" is no longer among us. Had the great pleasure of meeting Homer and Clara a couple of times. Prayers are with Ms Clara and family for the pain they are in. Homer don't really need them.
Picture below is Homer graciously autographing my plane at the 2007 TNK Homecoming. At first he was reluctant, didn't want to "ruin your pretty plane" as he put it. Treasure that.
We climb in our "proven" designs and derive great pleasure from them. It is with deep respect, great admiration and gratitude when I think of Homer designing and doing the actual proving in the early days. True aviator and a greater person.

Most of the world will look at my life as of little consequence. While I have never met the man, he has and will continue to effect my life. To me that is a notable accomplishment for which I have some envy and admiration.
I flew my Kolb on Sunday with a friend in his Kolb as well. We landed at sunset, I didn't think about it then but I guess it was fitting.

Great sadness to hear about Homer's passing. My thoughts and prayers are
with his family.
Now more than ever I'm grateful that I had the chance to attend the fly-in
at Homer's farm last year and meet him for the first time and spend some
time with him. He was one of a kind.

I don't know if was his first, but it was pretty early. It was still
hanging in his hangar last year, and I talked with Homer about it then. It
went through a number of engine iterations (type and number), and I got the
impression that he was never really satisfied with how it flew. Doubtless
others know more.

While I never had a long conversation with Homer I listened to him talk to other pilots and customers since OSH in the mid eighties.
While in the pattern at Lakeland a few years ago I was taxiing by the crowd and saw Homer. Without hesitation he gave a me a thumbs up. I figured he noticed my infamous uncovered cage and he liked the way it turned out. That made the entire trip worthwhile.
Thank you, Homer for countless flying memories!

I can only think of good things when I think of Homer. Every time I was around him he made you feel like family. After all his accomplishments I never saw a hint of arrogance . He has touched all of our lives. My wife and I had a very nice visit with Homer and Clara by the fence on the UL runway at Oshkosh last year. Had no Idea it would be my last time to see him. How saddened I am!! Our prayers are with Clara and the family.

I too had the good fortune to meet Homer at his 2007 fly-in, and many others with whom I've communicated via this forum, including the late great John W.
I've flown a lot of airplanes over the years but keep coming back to Kolbs. As I said last week I'll be flying a Slingshot soon and will always remember Homer. Great man, great aircraft designer.
