Glasair RG crash

I read about a Glasair RG crash in Florida where two people were killed. Was the plane a Gl 3? Were they doing areobatics or flying straight and level. I understand the plane crashed in a heavily wooded area. I have heard Glasairs fair better on open fields than Lancairs.

Apparently there was a witness to the Glasair crash and his observations
of the events appear to track with information from the Nangchang flying
with the Glasair.

The witness and his wife were fishing on the St Johns and the formation
with the Nangchang and Glasair were flying overhead. He describe the
events in detail that mirrored the report by the Nangchang pilot. After
the first rejoin they went into a spread formation with lead reversing
which caused the glasair to reposition to the outside of the turn. After
the first crossover, a reverse turn into the glasair was made and the
witness observed the glasair doing a barrel roll to the other side of
the lead. The little white airplane did another barrel roll went behind
a cloud and when he came out he was in a nose low tight spiral. He said
the tail was trying to come off. Dave ask if it came off, he said no it
was in the back and just flopped around. The airplane then descended
below the tree line to the east out of sight. From this information, it
appears that the "tail" must have been the elevator, had come lose and
was moving freely and not attached to the horizontal stab. If the
elevator has come lose, that would account for the failure to attempt
any kind of landing in adjacent fields, roads or open areas. If indeed
the elevator had torn lose from the mount hinges on one side it would
most likely tear the other side lose and be retained in the area by the
vertical stab. by the quarter inch u channel bar that ties the two
elevators together. That would account for the observation about the
tail flopping around in that the elevator would be free to move with
only the connecting rod and push pull tube attachment point holding into
place.

That description of the crash was sad to hear and I hate hearing about it. When I built my Glasair I measured the elevator bracket bolts that fed into the stabilizer spar and felt they were not long enough and replaced them. Before every flight I grab onto my elevators and try to move them to feel if the hinges are tight and I check with a flash light to see if all the bolts are tight or have moved out of position. I painted little red alignment marks on my brackets, bolt heads and nuts so that I can easily see if they have moved. After I assembled the elevator, I noticed the hinges binding. So I installed thin washers in between the brackets and rod ends and that freed up the elevator. I feared if I flew it that way I would have excessive wear on the hinges. EAA tech Joe Gauthier, felt the elevator trim spring tension recommended by Stoddard Hamilton was too great and installed spacers to loosen the springs up there by unloading the elevator hinges of some of the load. After priming and painting I noticed that full up elevators would bind against the stabilizer skins and pains taking sanded the paint from under the horizontal skin to free it up. I use WD 40 during my annual to flush out dirt. Several years ago I had an out board elevator rod end loosen up from wear and fixed it. I also had an out board lock nut come off in mid air on the aileron of my Pitts while on final and was able to safely land the plane. After that incident, I replaced all the lock nuts with castle nuts and carter pins on my Pitts. Soon after flying the time off my 1991 Glasair 2 S, I replaced all the Nylock nuts with castle nuts and carter pins.
