John and all,
I use the term "I" loosly--- I meaning, I did not buy my gear from anyone, but rather had a local FAB shop ( owned by a friend) make my gear spring from "Bar stock", as derermined by the plans. I know they heated the aluminum-- they do have temp sticks but they also told me that----"to determine the proper heat on the aluminum bar, they lay down a layer of soot from a prooane torch, than heat the aluminum to the point that the soot "disappears"-- at that point the bar is ready to bend. The trick is keeping the bar at the proper temperture.--------- Last week they just bent the mlg spring for the 750 I am scratch building-------- I don't know if they used a temp stick or the "soot method" but it came out real nice.

I don't know if this is something the "novice" could or should attemp-------maybe some of the other folks can at to this.
Fritz

I will be bending my 701 main gear in the near future also, so this post interests me. Any tips or suggestions from those who have already been through the process would be greatly appreciated.

One question I have is: Do you add or subtract degrees for spring-back when the gear is bent while heated as opposed to it being bent cold?

6061 aluminum comes in different heat treated conditions. The first is 6061-0 which is easiest to bend then the solution heat treated 6061-T4 and then the aged after T4 to T6 condition which is the hardest and strongest conditions. By heating the aluminum you may be altering the T6 condition either back to 0 condition or something between that. I would suggest calling your local heat treat shop and have it re-heat treated back to T6 condition because you don't want stress differences by having different tempers in your spring gear. My 801 gear is T651 which is T4 stress relieved and then straightened and then aged to T6.
I personally wouldn't take any chances on landing gear not being the right T6 temper at minimum and preferably T651. Typically heat treating aluminum takes several hours at about 950F or higher and then it is water/brine quenched giving it the T4 condition and still somewhat workable. Followed by another aging process at around 500F for a few hours. After the aging it is in T6 condition and ready to be your spring. It is also important to make sure of the grade of your aluminum so the heat treater can use the proper processing temperatures. Then again maybe Zenith just heats the spot up to bend and thats the end of that?????? If anyone knows what Zenith does please jump in.

T-6 etc, all true. Zac bends the 701 gear cold, I asked a couple years ago at Osh. I bent mine cold, figured it out after a couple of test pieces.

Dave, I built a bender, it uses a 20 ton bottle jack, its pretty crude but works like a commercial bender, which
draws the material around a die.
I can shoot you a picture of it. I will draw up plans eventually and make it wide enough to handle the 601 and 750 gear. If you are anywhere near Michigan I'll be happy to lend it.

Roy,

thankyou for the offer of the loan but liven in Alaska, that is too big of a trip for me. I would like to take u up on your offer of pictures or drawings witch ever is easier on you. I have access to a hydraulic press and thought I might be able to bend the gear with it.

Thankyou
dave
