Yesterday I finally tried flying with the Trio EZ-Pilot installed in
my leased Tecnam plane. It was a humbling experience. This gizmo
works so well it makes me wonder why I ever thought I could fly, and
particularly navigate, by myself without electronic help.

It is a single axis autopilot that works in three or four different
modes depending on how you count. In my plane it is connected to a
Garmin 296 GPS, but I suspect it will work with almost any aviation
GPS. It will TRACK the programmed GPS flight plan including turns at
waypoints. It will INTERCEPT the programmed GPS track to get you on
the planned ground track from an excursion (like after takeoff and
flight around the traffic pattern). It works in COURSE mode to hold
a ground track when not using a GPS programmed flight. All the above
modes work on ground track basis rather than aircraft attitude in the
air. Finally, when not getting GPS information it works as a wing leveler.

When the autopilot or servo is turned off you can't even tell it is
there. When it is in operation controlling the ailerons you can
easily override it with a little more than usual force on the stick.

In all my years (around 40) of flying small planes this is the first
time I have flown a plane with a working autopilot. Most of the
rental planes I flew that had old style A/P installed just went crazy
when you turned it on. This one really works well. It is easy to
learn and easy to use. I am happy to recommend it to anyone planning
to do enough cross country flying to justify the moderate cost (under $2000).

Thanks for the pirep, Paul! I'm thinking about using it on my sonex, due to the cost and weight.
