I'm building a trailer for a firefly. A bit premature seeing as I don't have a firefly yet, "but" I need to know the height and width of the wings and tail in the folded position. Specifically the dimensions behind (aft.) the engine and propeller location.
It would be helpful if I had the dimensions for a firestar 1 or 2 (for the same area behind the engine/propeller) also because its possible that I can not find a firefly and must settle for a firestar.
Would someone please help by giving me that info.
Thanks in advance. James H.

James- I believe the Firefly and Firestar are different. It also depends on who builds it. Some people have shortened the main tube, and there are various ways to mount the tailwheel. Some of the dimensions can be found on the Kolb website, Some on Don G.'s site, and some can be found on the Ultralight News site on the web.
I also think the Firestar II may be different from the original Firestar. You might be better off waiting until you have the plane, or find the largest dimensions and going with that.
I have an original Firestar from the mid 1980's, and the builder had cut one foot off the tube and shortened the wings. Landing gear widths will vary, and height due to landing gear length, tires, and brakes, and accessories.
Go to web search, and type in "Kolb Firefly". Look for "My Firefly", and "Firefly Slide Show". Also, any Ultralight News article. I don't have the URL's handy.
Good Luck!

James, here are some pictures for you. I have the Original Firestar, which is very close to the Firefly you are anticipating except it's heavier. This trailer is only 8'x 5' with 3/4" plywood for the bed covered with deck stain.
It's been serving me for over 22 years since I unfold and fold every time I fly.
In the last month, I bought a brand new 447 engine and it should last awhile. The first 377, I got with the kit in 1986, lasted 450 hours. The second engine was a used 447 and lasted about 500 hours. I expect this one to go for at least another 500 hours.

Hi Bill,
I have a firestar 2 , I have thought about takeing one bay out of the wings . It never occured
to me that I might want to cut the tail boom. We have a lot of rough air in south TX and sometimes it seems like it would be nice not to get bounced so much. Do you have any
thoughts about how the changes would affect the way the plane flys? ( numbers ?)?
Thanks.

Frank- I have absolutely no idea how it affects the plane. After my accident last year, I returned it to it's original configuration. The guy I bought it from said it flew great. Each wing has 5 ribs, and is 12 feet long. The overall length of the main fuselage tube is 12 feet, not the usual 13.

Bill, this is Winsted Minnesota. It's about 40 miles west of Minneapolis. Here are a couple more pictures of that airport.
