Do you have the water based carb heat fitted? If so, this can cause hot
start problems in some circumstances. Some guys have found it necessary to
fit a shut-off tap to stop in the carb heat water circuit to ensure that the
carbs are cool enough when you want to start again.

Peter

Tracey,

Start thinking about vapor lock as it would apply to your
particular installation in a 701. Move bubbling fuel out of your
engine compartment. What does your POH or Zenith say about
warm starts?

Hi Tracey,

I have a 914 in my Europa and it can be tough to start when its hot. I find it starts just fine if I turn the fuel pumps off, start it and then turn the pumps back on.

Hope this helps,

Paul

Hi Tracy
On my 914 i dont use the fuel pumps when hot, about 1/4 throttle and she picks up easily,I then wait until she falters through lack of fuel before hitting the pump switch, leaving the oil/water filler doors open for a short while on the ground improves the starting also,
regards
Ivor

The fact that you get better results with the fuel pump off coupled with opening the throttle implies that the engine is slightly flooded on a hot start. My guess would be that the carbs are getting hot enough to push the fuel from the floatbowls into the intake manifold after shutdown. Do you have the Rotax carb driptrays installed? These help block the heat from the exhaust on the 912 series and I assume [there's THAT word'] that the 914 is a similar layout concerning the exhaust/floatbowl layout.

Have you tried turning the fuel valve to OFF a minute or so before shutdown?

i can never start hot if i pulse or run the electric fuel pump before i try a turnover. the engine will flood and not start. cold starts i check run the pump first. turn off and start engine. i only run electric pump for low level and take off and approaches , in flight am only running on engine fuel pump .

Despite the subject, I take it you are not using a 914 - last time I looked
my 914 didn't have a mechanical pump.

Regards,

Mike
