I had cause to remove the seat in my KF 3, (total airfrme hours around 600) and found the pilot's seat belt badly worn where it passes through the seat pan. It has actually cut pretty well half way through. The damage could not be seen from above, and had gone unnoticed as its very hard to see under the seat without removing it.

Michael,

Do you think that much damage could happen in a year. I always hated the
chore, but the seat came out every year as I did the annual condition
inspection. This is good info as it is one of the many maintenance issues
that was not on my checklist.

Good post Mike.

I figured that was a wear point so spent a lot of time checking the fit and making sure the edges of the seat belt slot in the seat were rounded and smooth as I could make them. I take the seat out and inspect the belts each condition inspection.

I also extended the plastic tubing the rudder cables run in farther back than the manual showed to prevent the cables from rubbing on the out side seat belts.

Lowell,

The aircraft first flew in 96. I doubt if the seat had been removed before, so I guess the damage was probably gradual.

Tom

I think thats a very sensible thing to do, I shall do the same with mine in the future.

I also found scuffing marks on the aileron control rods, they had never felt stiff but the paint had come off the top of the rods where they had rubbed on the seat. The foam blocks under the seat were showing signs of permanent compression so I replaced them.

I think maybe the guy who had the plane before me was a bit heavier!
