Dear Listers,
Last week, someone posted a couple of pictures of 37 RVs flying in formation at OSH this year. Very cool, btw. But what caught my eye was how many of them had smoke systems installed. I found the following at ACS which looks interesting, but kind of big for an RV-8:

Is this what people are using?
Where would one mount this system in an RV-8? Behind the baggage area? In the engine compartment?
Seems really cool to have one of these systems, but are they just a big pain in the ass to maintain?
Thanks for the thoughts,
Matt Dralle

Matt, IMHO, that's a pretty robust smoke system. And a little pricey.
It also weighs 59 LBS when full.
I made my smoke tank for my Pitts when it didn't have a source of 12V.
I took the (15Lb???) freon bottle and took out the safety plug in the
bottom. Welded a 1" or 1 1/2" pipe adapter in the hole. This is where
my flop tube screws in. I ran the line from the flop tube over the top
of the tank to the front where I mounted a small pressure regulator and
the line going to the exhaust stacks. I removed the valve and welded
another pipe adapter in it's place. This is where I fill the tank with
1 gal of corvus oil .... AKA smoke oil. A pipe plug with a schrader
valve screwed in allows me to put 100+ pounds of air on it.
I was space challenged, so the little bottle was my choice, and it
mounts under the fuel tank between my legs. Not being terribly familiar
with the RV-8, if you have a baggage compartment that would hold a
larger bottle .... I'd put it there. A ball valve to turn on/off the
smoke is all you need.

Matt:
Most of us in the 37-ship flight have the Smoking Airplanes system. A couple of the airplanes have "homebrew" system.
None of the passes had all the airplanes with smoke on. During practice C it was determined that we had too much smoke. Typically we had no more than two airplanes in a row with smoke on.
BTW. The flight was 36-RVs with one F1 Rocket.

This might be lower-tech or lower sophistication than you want, but...
