Hello everyone,

I've been flying a Diamond Star (DA40) lately, and it has the same eyeball-vents-on-the-panel that my RV-7A has. When flying in the DA40 with the vents open, I notice that my ANR headset softens the engine noise, but the noise of the air coming out of the eyeball vents is really loud (loud enough that I really need to crank the audio to hear comms). If the vents are closed the noise is reduced dramatically.

For those of you flying, do you notice this same thing in your RV? Has anyone done anything to combat this?

I've done all my training in newer Cessna 172s and 182s, where their outside air vents hardly make any noise, even full open.

You can increase the squelch. I notice it kind of depends where my vents are pointed at (RV6). The more directly they are pointing at me the more I need to increase the squelch. I have heard that others have put steel wool behind the vent in the SCAT tubing. Playing with the squelch works for me most of the time. I use the in your ear head set most of the time but if my better half is not with me I sometimes use her ZULU.

Hope it helps.

I have wind noise In my RV6A with my (Van's big plastic) vents open (lots of air)... Reduces when they are closed... Not loud wind noise as you say in that I don't have to up the intercom volume... I have Bose headsets.. Probably the noise in the various models of aircraft is due to the amount/velocity of air rushing in...??
