after losing coolant (had to for the certificated versions to get their

I don't know about a Titan, but I think a 912 powered Kolb could do it. Wink

Ever notice how quickly CHT and engine oil temps drop once power is reduced
below 5000 rpm cruise.

4000 rpm generates very little heat, and my Kolb will fly comfortably at
3,500, and on the edge at 3,000.

Unless I had a good forced landing area I knew I could make, I'd never shut
the engine down if I blew a radiator hose, or lost coolant some other way.

The critical component in this situation is the cylinder head. If the head
is overtemped for a certain period of time and temp it is trash. I'd have
to dig out the book to refresh my memory. If it is overtemped, it has to be
tested for hardness, IIRC from 912 school.

Eric Tucker said Rotax tested a 912, don't know if it was a UL or a ULS, for
two hours without coolant. Result was no damage to the engine. I do not
know what the test parameters were. However, this always stuck in my mind
and I would not hesitate to continue running the engine if I did lose
coolant, whether it ruined the engine or not, if I was over hostile terrain.

I've done a couple test flights at low speeds in preperation for me and Dennis to fly together and IIRC I think 70mph with no flaps required around 4000 rpm? Something like that. I think I could keep it above stall and maintain alt at 3500, next time I'm up Ill check.
I havn't tried this with the powerfin yet which is slightly more efficient at lower speeds.

But that sounds like I could go for quite a while in slow flight w/o coolant.

Either way I'm with you, I don't care if I burn it up, I'm going to do whatever I have to to land safely.

Also, yes this motor cools off dramatically below 5000 so yeah I guess they all do. In fact, on really cold days I've had trouble getting the oil temp above 160 basically causing me to abort the flight. And I have the thermostat that shuts the oil cooler slap off below 180. Tape on the radiator should bring the CHT's up which should in turn get the oil temps up into the green. Going to work on that a little harder this winter than last.

Can't wait till fall, only a month or two away....
