Folks,

Did you just rivet the plate on, or did you "upgrade" to nut plates? I
worry about ever having to drill those rivets out incase something
happens to the servo or if I want to CorrsionX in the inside of my tail.

Hey Lee,

I have been thinking about the same thing. So I have decided to go with nut plates and machine screws. Not that I am opposed to rivets, but wanted to make it easier to access in case of an issue.

I riveted the plate in question, and many other places as well. I
still used nutplates and screws in places which certainly need access
for inspection such as the aileron bellcrank.

Drilling out rivets is very easy if you do it properly. I start with
a number 40 drill (the same one I start drilling rivet holes with)
and drill the center of the rivet down just a little way. Then I use
a number 30 followed by a number 20 if needed until the head of the
rivet pops off. Some times this also removes the rest of the rivet
and some times it takes a little work with a punch to remove the
remaining parts.

After doing this at least 200 times on my airplane I feel it is a
straight forward and easy process to complete with no damage to the
parts being held by the rivet.
